Three cheers for the independent watchmaker!

Today I took my new 5513 to a local guy who I'm starting to trust, and asked him to look at the movement and tell me how it looks. Two hours later he said "It was serviced in '02, based on the markings in the caseback. It looks too good to be all original, so I think new parts were put in. It's good for at least 1 more year if not more." He regulated it, sealed it, pressured tested, and $45 later I was walking the streets with my perfectly running, watertight 5513 on my wrist.

Rolex USA, OTOH, would have insisted on full service, 4 weeks and $500 if I was lucky. F them.

Moral of the story: Use your local guy. He'll tell you the *real* story, not some cooked-up crock of poop designed to get into your wallet unnecessarily.

Here it is again, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.... LOL, any excuse to post a pic, right?

Great pic and I agree whole heartedly!! Unless it is a watch still covered by Rolex, I use the same local dude for all my stuff. They have more of an interest in me being happy than Rolex does, they want the repeat business.

Micah,

Your watchmaker obviously knows his stuff and, more importantly, he's an honest bloke....and that's what really matters in this line of work. Good on ya!! Nice pic, by the way!!

I've got a local guy who I think is pretty good, although I haven't taken any of my Rolexes to him yet. However, I'm thinking of giving him a try with my 25 yr old DJ. I doubt it has ever been serviced and it's not one I wear a great deal, so I may test him out with letting him service that one. If he does a good job with that, I may let him work on my other DJ and my DD, both of which are at least 10-15 years old and have probably never been serviced.

I'm always reluctant to mess with something that ain't broke, though. Tough decision.

Yes agree with you Micah, if you find a good watchmaker, treat him as your best friend, they are now fast becoming a rare beast. The service of a Rolex is not rocket science, and any competent watchmaker can do it.
And yes your local guy will tell you the truth, and most love there work.My friend treats every watch very much like a small child. And it is a
pleasure to see him work, again regulation is not rocket science.I do most of my own,but to get them spot on,will take it to him. With a timing machine its a lot easier.Again Micah that a fine 5513 I am getting a bit
jealous,wear it in good health.
