Where are the waiting lists?

I remember in 1999 looking to buy a Submariner date and not being able to find one. I finally went to an AD and bought a GMT and quickly took it to Rolex on 5th ave to have the Pepsi bezel insert swapped out for an all black insert just to look more like a Sub. There was that "hard to get " mystique about the Submariner back then. Then all the talk was the " Green 50th anniversary" model and how hard it will be to get......one year later they were in every dealers window. It seems now, there are no more "hard to get" Rolex's out there. Maybe it's because I live in NYC area and have access to so many AD's and so many "grey market" dealers (not even including 47th st the Mecca for used and new Rolex). The point is, there is no longer that hard to get factor. Is it the Internet, or all the dealers that have popped up! Name one new Rolex that isn't in every dealers inventory. Any watch that just came out, or is the "it" watch is everywhere now. Maybe I'm wrong, but that "hard to get" mystique is gone.

I was thinking there was more of a mystique then a mystic but that could have been a mistake. I believe the BLNRs are in pretty high demand as well as SS Daytonas neither of which are readily available.

Depends on where you are located. In NYC, good luck finding a SS Daytona....go an hour outside the city, and they're everywhere

Come to NY, BLNR's and Daytona's are everywhere. Not saying it's a bad thing, but I kinda liked the added challenge of finding a particular watch, or anticipating its arrival.

Yep, D-Blue & BLNR. Add to the list: Platona and anything with a meteorite dial. And there's the leopard Daytona monstrosity.

Not quite sure what you're talking about. I've been down the road of a BLNR from an AD in NYC, and finally gave up and ordered one from davidsw. Of course if you go to 47th street you can have one in 5 minutes, but whats the fun in that. Stainless Daytona also tough to find in an AD case, but those can be ordered and delivered in days.

Visiting AD's I have yet to see a SS Daytona in the case but of course if you really want one you can easily get one from a trusted seller here.

Where in HK were you able to get it without any waiting time. Which dial did you get?

Here in the UK I visited a AD in a place called Maidstone and they had every sports model in the window!
I don't think anything is rare anymore.

No modern day has ever been rare some just hard to get at say retail prices but if willing to pay more, then they are quite easily to find.Trouble with the Daytona many bought them just to flip when they first came out, some made crazy money if you was willing to pay. Ever since the early Daytona days this has been one of the main reasons they were hard to get at the ADs.Simply because around 80% of them ended up on the grey market, then sold to those who were willing to pay. So in many ways Joe public was to blame for the Daytona shortage at ADs.

If you like mystique then perhaps you should be disappointed but if the world is full of the best new models then I'd say Rolex has improved their value chain to include projected demand.

It's a good thing for sales and for buyers - no more "scalping prices"

Maybe true - but in the past I blamed Archie Luxury. It was more enjoyable

It's not a bad thing, but Rolex is a mass-produced luxury item. Any sense of "hard to get" is in the eye of the consumer only.

Scarcity creates mystique but availability supports share growth and revenue. The more mature a company becomes the more they realize the economic value of ensuring supply (vs. letting 'scalpers' capture that 'value'), with the best companies providing it in a managed, discipline way (i.e., managing distribution channels). I think Rolex has done this effectively vs. other brands. There is a sweet spot between flooding the market and being unavailable so shortages are perceived but is an uneconomic risk to try to scalp.

Waiting lists are for the unwashed steerage passengers of the Rolex world, you're on TrF, you have a first class ticket to Rolexland.

AD names please. I can't recall ever seeing a BLNR or ss Daytona at any NYC AD. Have seen BLNRs in the case, but only outside the city.

I guess it all depends on where you are located and what kind of inventory your AD keeps in stock...

There's a difference between scarce or hard to get, and can't keep in stock. Certainly right now an SS Daytona or a BLNR is not going to sit on display long in a place like Manhattan, but that doesn't mean the dealer can't order one and have it for you fairly quickly.

The BLNR is hard to come by in these parts and yes, there is a waiting list.

According to my AD, there have only been about three sold here in New Mexico, as he is the only AD.

Down in the southern part of the state where most people go to El Paso to do their shopping for things they can't get here, there may be a few more, but New Mexico is sparsely populated outside of Albuquerque/Santa Fe, so I doubt there are more than a handful among the two million folks who live here.
