I am so broke......! Sheaffer PFM V

Just picked up my 5th pen in the last 10 days or so. Savings account is screaming in agony, but my pen cases are oozing with glee!

How about a Sheaffer Pen for Men V (PFM) in black and gold circa about 1959. It is much fatter than the Sheaffer Imperial and lovely to write with if you like bigger barrels. And you gotta love that gold filled bump square on the bottom of the Touchdown filler.

This is new old stock and still has the original chalk text on the barrel and original box. Just another one of my grails, but I have to admit that I am running out of them. Still looking for my Hemingway FP!

Well it started out with a Parker 45 FP+BP set
then a Mont Blanc Mozart
followed by a Waterman Phileas FP+BP set

and now I'm looking at a Parker 51

Pic of the Parker 45 (best I could do at 4am) - the rest I haven't received yet.

Nice set and those Phileas' FP write so well for the amount of money we invest in them.

Good luck on the 51. I have one and it is a dream to write with.

Congrats Richard! That looks like a very nice NOS Sheaffer! They do make nice pens back in the days!
What nib is it? and is it flexible?

Thanks buddy!

No, not much if any flex to it and it is a medium in size. I filled it right away and it is buttery smooth, but I am thinking about having it meistered into a cursive italic or OM. No line variation with the nib as is.

Wow, Richard, that is a real beauty and a great score. Congrats. I love the look of those Sheaffer inlaid nibs. They look very futuristic and sleek and just flat lovely.

I'm curious about this whole NOS thing though. How does a 51 year old pen last that long without ever being sold or used?

According to Richard Binder 1959 was the first year for the PFM with the inlaid nib. Very cool.

John,

Couldn't tell you how this happens, but glad it does. Apparently they get put on the back shelf or actually sold and stuck in someones under ware drawer by someone who doesn't change their under ware often!

The sure sign though is the chalk text around the barrel. That wears off very quickly when one is used.

I bought this one to carry daily, but am having second thoughts as these are extremely rare I am finding out. I have inked it and it writes as well as any pen I have ever owned so I'll have to wait and see which urge wins out. The urge to preserve the pen or the urge to use it. So far the preservation side of me is winning.

And thanks for the info on the nib. I didn't know the inlaid nib first year was 1959.

Couple more photos:

That's great info, Richard. I didn't know that about the chalk. If I ever come across something like that, I'll know to look for it. As far as using it, it sounds like it's a terrific writer. I'd have a hard time not taking it for a spin, at least once in a while. The more I write with these FP's the more I become addicted to the feel of the nib gliding across a good quality paper, like a skate on ice. I've been journaling like crazy as of late because I just can't get enough!

I just can't get over how sweet your Sheaffer looks. What a beauty!

Richard, I would find it hard not to use the pen but you do have a couple(chuckle...) of other pens you could use so the decision would be easier to set it aside now for awhile!!!

Thanks John!

This one does write so very well that it will make my decision to use it just that much more difficult!
