an early 6150 creates a stir

How many were sitting by their computers waiting for this rarity to be sold yesterday, I know I was. With a modest estimate of 100 to 200 quid I thought I was in with a chance (as did everyone else in the vintage watch collecting world) It was a model #6150 which I think is known as the pre named Explorer from about 1953/4

Bamfords three-Day Fine Art and Antique Auction
Catalogue description
Lot 1120 A gentleman's Rolex Oyster Perpetual Precision wristwatch, black dial, Arabic and baton indicators, stainless steel bracelet strap
£100-200

This was the condition report they sent me ["Lot 1120
Scratches to glass, general wear to bracelet, seconds hand moving, dial
would benefit from a clean, 3.5cm bezel"]

Final price 5000 quid, ($8000) not surprised really, a beauty

Dial looks beautiful on that especially the lume markers. Whoever got it sure will be happy when they get that crystal buffed out and see what good condition it's in. Nice set of hands too What do these usually go for? Must be really rare all original especially with the long mercedes hand and odd minute hand. Hopefully someone here got it so we can see it in all it's glory.

Insanely cool watch. The first thing I would do is get that dial refinished. Looks ratty. Wink wink!

and dont forget Harry, the hands would need a nice re-lume too. I know some "restorers" that would scrape off all that gunk and make them look "as good as new" again, they might even just chuck on a nice set of "ebay specials" to save time.
No, I think it's safe, only a true dealer/collector would have paid that kind of money for it

Interested to see. I have just inherited grandfathers 6150 pre explorer first quarter 1953, completely original on expanding riveted bracelet, does not run, but did when he died 25 years ago. What to do next?. What could it be worth?.

Next? Make some pictures and show them to us. And don't bring the watch to an authorised Rolex dealer.

Grandfathers 6150 pre explorer currently being sorted and being brought back to life. Cant wait to get it back. Quarter 1 1953, still has original dial, hands, and Super Oyster crown, rivited expanding bracelet. We know he bought it in Newcastle in 1953 and paid about £65 for it- probably worth a bit more now?

6150 Pre-Eplorer comes home

Grandfathers 1953 6150 Pre-explorer now sorted. First quarter 1953 numbered 930XXX, still has Super Oyster crown, grandfather obviously never had it changed to screwdown.Original gilt dial, inscribed Precision and gilt hands. Automatic now working, fully serviced and keeping perfect time. Decided not to have it polished just cleaned, looks great! Expanding rivited bracelet now as smooth as silk. Been wearing it all weekend, only wish granfather was still around to see it.

First attempt at posting pictures of restored 6150 Pre Explorer first quarter 1953. Super Oyster Crown, automatic fully working, keeping perfect time. Expanding rivited bracelet replaced in 1968 now as smooth as silk. Only wish my grandfather was around to see it.

I'm not a die-hard vintage guy, but your restored watch is so lovely. And the fact that all those dings and scratches were put there by your grandfather makes it spectacular. Great color for the strap.

Agree on the strap choice. Gives it an entirely new vitality.
