Patina getting lighter???

I have been reading about watches with a dark patina getting lighter when worn in the sun...

So it bears asking: If you like the Patina on your watch, based on these stories, would you hesitate to wear your watch in the bright sun for extended periods of time???

Nope. Not at all. I might not if it was a 6542 or something

Excessive sun is known to whiten almost anything, but I don't believe I'll be baking my collection outside anytime soon.

I personally would be heartbroken if the beautiful honey colored patina on the dial of my Mid 1950s Tissot Visodate got lighter from my own neglegence of constantly having it out in the sun. The watch ive learned is also hard to find in the non seastar configuration that mine is in(it doesnt say seastar on the dial and it has a beautiful roulette date wheel), so it only gets worn a few times a year. The rest of my vintages though, im not that protective of when it comes to maintaining their patina.

It does happen all the time , it's probably something we should document a little more but that's actually quite tricky across the net as to do exact comparisons someone has to a) be bothered b) duplicate the exact position and lighting conditions for photo conparisons ...

a lot of the guys who have big pieces that spend a lot of time in safes / banks see it often ... In my experience darkening takes months / years though lightening is observable in days / weeks.

I just had a lovely 5517 come out of the safe. The hands as is normal in our would were stabilized at service in 2009 before it was put in a safe. On putting in the dial was a perfect match to the hands. On removal the mk1 maxi dial had darkened substantially more than the hands ... 4 weeks later after a bit of time in the Aussie winter sun the hands had remained almost constant the dial had lightened to match perfectly

What again is important to note is that this isn't an absolute rule , other factors not least the batch of lume will have an impact. I've seen other watches come straight out after years in a safe and just be a but yellow.

I think it would be hard to be in the sun enough to bleach out your patina unless you were a lifeguard or fisherman...

Or on a motorcycle a lot with your watch facing skyward, like me. Sometimes I get nervous about the whole losing-the-patina thing and I flip my DRSD around to the inside of my wrist, out of the sun.

I wear my old sub in the sun and all other conditions for that matter.
I left it on the window sill at work every day last summer and the tritium has lightened up heaps and the chocolate tinge on the bottom of the dial has spread noticeably.
UV rays definitely have an effect on these old dials.

I'm a fisherman (recreational) and don't wear anything vintage out there but my Tudor daily-driver greatly whitened in the sun

When I got my 16750, it had spent the last few years in a drawer and had yellowed noticeably. I really like the yellow patina, and would hate to have it whiten & look new, but that’s not going to stop me from wearing it. It MAY be getting lighter now that I’m wearing it daily; I’m not sure. *shrug

Just to be clear ... Before anyone panics !!!

I have never ... Including with the guys who have deliberately chased the effect .. Seen a watch lighten up in the sun by more than a smallish % degree ...

You aren't going to take a nice deep patinad watch ... Wear it for a few weeks in the sun and see it go white !!!
