Why is water bad for a watch
I know getting water in a watch is bad however if the watch is older and never serviced.... Then one day there is water under the crystal, it has to go for a total overhaul/service. What is the problem as the movement since it is disassembled cleaned, new gaskets, etc. Is the watch as good as new, I would think so, but if I'm wrong please explain. Thanks in advance

This is why. Because all stainless steel parts get rusty and even coated brass will oxidise.
Water in a watch needs to be treated as soon as possible. |

Just saw when he sea visits your watch, amazing post. I will now be diligent about getting the watch pressure tested every several years

Also, the dial will normally be damaged by water. Can't do much with the damage the longer you leave the moisture there...

That is correct, the water will slowly creep under the paint and damages it.

You are correct, once you do a cleaning/service the watch should be good to go and back to normal. Just make sure gaskets were replaced. A few weeks back my wife had a foggy crystal. I took it straight to my watchsmith who did a full cleaning/service. Better safe than sorry! |
