Found 114060 Sub (preowned)

I visited my local AD today during lunch and found that they had just received a black Sub no date 114060 that a frequent customer traded in on Friday. Apparently, hes a habitual trade in guy who likes to change it up often. Watch was purchased from this same AD in late November. So, he literally had it 1 month and traded it in. Looks to be in pristine condition, from my un-trained eye. Still has almost 5 yrs on Rolex warranty left. AD is selling at new MSRP.

Ive been dropping in almost every week to see if they had anything new, hoping to wait for a Hulk, but it looks like that may be a while. Thinking of picking this one up for MSRP and then trading in for Hulk or GMT if it becomes available. If anything, it helps me build a relationship with this AD.

Thoughts? What should I ask or be careful of when buying a pre-owned Sub?

Thanks in advance..

Ask yourself do you really want the watch. There is literally no issue associated with buying a two month old watch from an AD other than price. In today's market they are free to charge what they want on formerly owned watches.

If you like the ND Sub, I would say go for it. It's basically new, or as close to new as you're going to get pre-owned. This would definitely be a good hold over until your Hulk or GMT arrives.

I think an AD selling a used Sub for full retail is a bit lame regardless of the market. But that’s just me.

I would be careful if you buy it without the intention of keeping it. If you trade it in you will lose a few hundred at best. Well, in my opinion anyway. And if you lose say$500 after 3 months, was that worth it to build a relationship? And I’m just throwing numbers out there, I don’t typically buy and sell so I’m not qualified to say how much or how little you will lose.
Good luck.

If you really want it and like it, go for it. If not pass and let someone else have it.It's a great piece in any collection and you really can't lose, try and negotiate the tax.

Try and find out the customers name and buy his next watch before he trades it in! LoL

Sure. The AD is making a hell of a living on this watch.

Hahahahaha! Great idea. I guess buying this watch would get you their name on the warrantee card!

Buy and wear. Trade when the Hulk comes if you can. No issues with a 1 month old watch I wouldnt imagine but you can have them check. Sounds like a good plan if you can swing it.

Yeah but the AD may low ball him with the trade value.

Why not just save your cash and get on a waiting list for the Hulk?

For full retail is a great price.
Here in the UK it would be at least £1,000 over retail

Agree 100%...I just saw a 6-month old 114060 in St Thomas last week and they wanted $8800 USD for it, so MSRP ($7500 USD) is a very fair deal!

So you are buying a watch you don’t really want, knowing you will trade it in at a loss as soon as possible??
Sounds silly...No

I traded in a two month old 114060 towards my SD43. Just a few months ago. I would absolutely have bought that 114060 if I was someone else. Warranty still there, watch was in PERFECT condition and I wore it all the time and advised AD that watch was +\- a half a second. Of the 5 ive had not one of them ran better than that sub. I miss it but wouldnt buy it back. Point is....quite possible to get a womderful piece

Seems like an okay deal to me if you actually intend to keep it long-term, but I bet the watch is gone by now :-P

Except that he’s planning to trade it as soon as what he really wants becomes available. At which point, he’ll realize a loss on the watch. How does that make any sense?

I completely agree. On GP I wouldn't buy that watch. Pre-owned is not new, and I'm in the camp of people that don't pay over retail for a luxury item.

I can understand this behavior with a Grey Market Dealer - it's how they make money. With an AD though, I think it's an extremely dishonest practice to sell a new and pre-owned watch at the same price, especially when it was a watch they sold only recently.

Regardless of my personal feelings about that situation though, I think that it might not be in your best interest to buy the watch unless you're going to hold onto it. You'll likely lose money on your trade-up to the Hulk.

On the flip side though, you can think of it like wearing a 'loaner watch' for $X (where X is the difference between the purchase price of the No Date Sub and the trade-in price) until you get your Hulk. In that way, as long as X is a low enough number that it doesn't bother you, it could be a great way to wear a nice watch while waiting for your dream piece!

If your plan is to buy it, wear it, trade it back to the AD on a Hulk or Gmt and lose 500 on the trade, think again. I'll bet you'll lose more like 1k + tax of course, unless you retail it.

I agree. Why not let someone who genuinely wants this model Submariner the opportunity to own?

No! You are buying a used watch (it doesn't matter whether it is 1 month or 1 year old) at full retail price, which you don't really like that much and are planning to go through the trouble of selling it (at a loss!) once the watch you've ordered arrives??
