1803 as a Daily watch
Question - does anyone daily an 1803 DayDate?
I find having the day and date complication is very useful for international travel, but I don’t know if an 1803 can take the daily beating. |

I struggled with the idea for quite a while. My 18038 is not my daily but I have come to add it into my weekly rotation. I posted a question about it when I was struggling and there were many who stated that they wear their day/dates on a daily basis. I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are wearing it every day and what your travel situation looks like. I think I would avoid wearing it to parts of the world that are known for Rolex thefts.

Why can't it be worn every day? Wasn't the watch built to be worn every day? If it's serviced, why not? I have a 5513 that was worn daily from 1968 to 1984 then 1996 to recently when I added more to my collection.

I’m not sure how a DD aids in international travel...but an 1803 can handle daily wear.

Fine as a daily wearer if you have the right lifestyle to pull it off. Probably not ideal if you're something like a plumber or a bricklayer...
Love the OP's use of "daily" as a verb. |

Flights mess with my internal clock. I’ve been on trips where I was discombobulated and missed flights. Phones don’t help when you don’t have service nor WiFi. |

I wear mine on a brown suede strap which makes it into weekly rotation but cant wear it daily because
1) its one of those rare dial 1803s that i think is irreplaceable 2) i really like being able to shower and swim with my daily |

Really, the "correct" answer depends on you. Are you okay with the wear, scratches, and dings that typically come with daily wear? If so, sure, wear it daily. If not, wear it more selectively and wear something else on a daily basis.

Jack Nicklaus for one. Articles frequently appear showing the true master with his Rolex he bought in early 70’s.

I am into vintage watches, Rolex and others, and I wear a lot of 40-50yrs old pieces.
I also travel a lot with my watches......4-5 flights per months, all over the world. Absolutely no problem with having a vintage DD as a daily. They are tough watches. The only vintage pieces that I might be careful with are the ones with no shock protection but that it is not the case with DD. Wear it and enjoy it, they are meant to be a daily watch. If I may add, just make sure the watch it is serviced. Over the years I have bought over 30 vintage watches, most of them needed service as people did not want to spend the money servicing them or they did not think it needs one if it is still running. I am just a little careful when it comes to water, I would not jump in a pool with a vintage watch. Other than that, I take no other precautions.

And his watch will be auctioned off for charity in December.

Jack Nicklaus's day-date looks pretty good considering it was not worn in rotation. It was his one and only watch.

I wear mine almost every day, but rarely on the president bracelet. I think it's the perfect watch, and I (almost) can't live without the Day/date complication anymore. Wore a Cartier for a couple of weeks and screwed up my laundry times twice because I was missing day/date.

Using this dial as a daily beater is a good decision.

Personally I think it's better as a daily since it's such a PITA to set the non quickset Day-Dates. If you wear it everyday you don't have to worry about that.

Daily wear on an 1803 works though keep in mind the bracelet will stretch over time.

I rotate among 4- and 5- digit DDs, but I’d have no hesitation whatsoever about using one 1803 as a daily. Those movements are time-proven to be very tough - I’ve heard it put as “Anything your arm can take, it can take.” OTOH, I wouldn’t rely on any 1803 to be waterproof absent a pressure test (and even with fresh gaskets and wet pressure test, I doubt I’d SCUBA with it).
