Historical Datejust Question - conflicting info
Hi Guys - while taking a slow dip into the vintage pool chasing Datejusts, and Oyster Perpetuals (the professional models are too hot for me) I have a question. My question - when did Rolex start to produce the Datejust in two tone variations? I have read in a book I have that it was in 1962, but the watch I am looking at predates that and is two tone. I have also read contradictory information elsewhere. Looking at watches on Chrono24 there are earlier references for sale (ref 6605) that are two tone. Does anyone know definitively? I tried searching early Rolex advertisements for the 1950's Datejust but to no avail.
Thanks, Bill |

Mark - it is a 1957 Ref 6605. I don't have the serial as I don't have the watch (yet).
Richard - cool link and thank you. Supports my theory that the Rolex book I have is wrong, as there are several examples of Ref 6605 in two tone. |

So if no serial how do you know it's 1957 :-)?

I have an ovettone 6105 in two-tone. I don't know if you'd consider it a DateJust, most collectors consider it a Bubbleback, but it does have a date, and it is 36mm, just like later models. I don't know exact manufacture date, but it's definitely pre-1960s.
