Ireland. Any recommendations.

Headed to Ireland in July. Plan to be there from Jul 1 to 9. Will be going with another couple. it's her 50th birthday and she wants to see/stay at Ashford Castle. We won't stay there due to cost, but having looked at Ballynahinch Castle and Ballyvolane House.

I think we are flying into Shannon, then out of Dublin.

I am going to get two-three days of fly fishing (brown trout, Atlantic salmon - maybe).

suspect we will stay on the west side of the island, then move down the eastern border through Killarney into Cork (brown trout), and see Waterford then the last 48 hours up to Dublin.

any recommendations on things to do or see while there?

lodging:

ballynachinch castle
ballyvolane house
Delphi estate
renvyle house
glasha house B&B

things to see:

cliffs of moher
Blarney Stone

any considerations in preparing for trip. I have started application for driver permit through AAA. will rent a car.

any guidance or recommendations? please share. thanks.

Have fun, I’ve been to England and Scotland but the Emerald Isle, yet.
Mind your P’s & Q’s and even not drinking especially while driving, all too easy for the brain to revert back to American road rules. Visit Galway while on the west coast, some of my family hails from there. Catch up those trout! That’s all I got. Slainté

You are in for a treat- we did Ireland in 2017 and loved it.

Any plans to venture into Northern Ireland? We loved Belfast and the Antrim Coast. Titanic museum was really interesting and very well designed.

We kayaked in Killarney National Park- that was incredible. There is an island with a castle you can explore. Also great place to rent bikes or just hike. Make sure to do Ring of Kerry tour- especially if you are driving yourself, you can do it in reverse and off hours to avoid crowds. Had a great night of craic at Murphy's in Killarney. The band was top notch, and probably our most fun night of the trip.

We also kayaked north of Dublin out of Dalkey- we got to see a bunch of seals, and it was stunningly beautiful. Dalkey is a nice town to walk around- lots of celebrities have homes there.

Cork was our favorite- we had a great tour guide we met there, and did the Fota Wildlife Park, Blarney Castle and Cobh city.

Dublin was fun- but we preferred the smaller cities. One "must stop" is the Brazen Head. You can have a drink in the same space people have been gathering since 1198!

Let me know if you have any other specific questions- happy to help.

I hope you have an amazing trip Dan

I’ve never been, but it’s on my list of places to get to one day. I’ll be curious to hear what folks have to say, and I hope you update or make a new post of your trip with pictures

I am not Irish, but was warmly welcomed by the people in Dublin. I am sure you can understand why.

Your schedule seems filled. I spent 3 days drunk in Dublin and that was enough.

Save your $25. In four driving trips to the EU, no one has asked for my International Driving Permit. They only want to see the license from whatever state you reside.

Have a great trip.

100%. I’d add Trinity College, Teeling, Guinness as well. Temple Bar.

You can pretty much see all of the hot sites in Dublin in 3 days.

Galway is amazing.
We did a Game of Thrones location hunt. Saw Winterfell. That was good.

Edit: I drove around the entire country. Wild.

Ballybunion and lahinch are great if you are a golfer

You’ll immediately realize why they call it the Emerald Isle. It’s just beautiful everywhere you are

Dublin to me wasn’t as great as I thought it would be. YMMV

A collapsible umbrella and waterproof shoes.
I spent two weeks in Ireland and never saw the streets dry.

Hi,
I've got a place about 15 mins from Ballynahinch. If you want to PM me I can give you all the details. That side of Conemara is beautiful.
If you want a very rustic cottage I am not typically renting my place but always make exceptions for a fly fisherman.

Cashel House Hotel is very good. Excellent food. Not super plush, but nice. Not close to things like bars though.
Ballynahinch is excellent - especially if you book a few beats there.

Mount Falcon is fabulous. Super fishing.

If you message me I'll give you my contact details.
