best Daytona for the best oboist..?

I was watching a video of the Berlin Philharmonic performing Smetana's Moldau... (a great performance, by the way)

And noticed that their principal oboe was wearing something shiny and a bit special looking. I hit pause and rewound the video slightly.. indeed!

a 116506. He's basically at the pinnacle of a profession that's only got a handful of people in the world who can do what he does; fitting that he's got the best Daytona.

Great catch and great post. Likely to be underappreciated! Guessing you could spot some good wrist candy in Vienna.

I guess you can wear a sport watch with a tux after all. Sure, it’s PM, but still a sport model. If the oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic can do it, then I must not have been committing a faux pas all these years. Lol.

Good spotting!

That's what is great about a Rolex. They are clothing agnostic or in fashion no matter what you wear. And a Platinum Daytona? Goes with anything.

So much for starving artists!

That's a big expense for an Orchestral Musician.

I was thinking the same thing
Dont get me wrong, I'm sure such an artist is well paid, but is he $70k+ watch well paid?

Also, he does look a little like a bobble head in that picture
Either its the angle or he has small hands...

I've attached a photo of Walter Lehmayer (centre, smiling). He played with the Vienna State Opera in the 1960s and was the principal oboist in the Vienna Philharmonic in the 1970s. Here he is pictured with the New York Kammermusiker. When I was a kid my parents had a box in the Große Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, and before performances I'd always wave at Herr Lehmayer and he'd wink back at me.

Perhaps someone might identify what watch he's wearing?

Principal oboe position -- which is one of the higher paid ones, considering its traditional importance in repertoire-- at the NYPhil was supposedly earning in the $400k+ range in salary, prior to all the covid related salary adjustments. Typically, the top orchestral musicians also have a very busy teaching schedule too (and private lessons are very costly).

Berlin Phil is one of the top orchestras in the world -- not sure if they pay similarly to the top US orchestras, but i would think they need to pay pretty well to retain musicians of that caliber.. I suppose it's not out of the question for someone who's been in that position for a few decades to get a really nice watch, especially if they're into it (like many of us). Elite orchestras also have pensions.

Odd body proportion perspective is probably due to wide angle lens on my phone camera. He appears normally in the video..

The watch is gorgeous but I am also going to comment on how BEAUTIFUL and expensive that Oboe itself is. As a (former) Oboist myself, I am SUPER in love with it!

Base salary of the top European orchestras is quite a bit lower than the top orchestras in the US. But he might have a pretty good personal contract. That being said, European orchestras, typically, don't pay as much over scale.

My first post, love the forum!

Cursory Googling suggests it's a model that shares his namesake.. how much does a Monnig AM 155 actually go for?..

he seems to wear a larger diameter dark-dialed gold piece with a leather strap in other videos. It wasn't an obvious make or model.. Who knows, maybe he's lurking on this forum and can tell us. =) (AM...if you are, sorry if this is embarrassing, or that you'd rather not people know about it. PM me and we can ask for a mod to delete!)

some years back (probably 10+), I was watching the NYPhilharmonic on TV. And none other than the legendary Phil Myers (previously principal horn) was wearing a black Panerai. This was before the 317 / 335 and other dark colored Pams were released. So it may have been a Pre-V or something.

That’s Albrecht Mayer, who is a star in the classical music world. He’s a great musician and oboist who has played principal oboe in the Berlin Philharmonic for nearly thirty years, and he’s only 56 now. He also records and performs all over the world. He can afford, and has earned, his watches. I think I’ve also seen him wearing a Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921. He clearly enjoys the finer things in life!! His oboe is made by Monnig and it’s a gold plated “Albrecht Mayer” model.

The latest Architectural Digest home video tour on YouTube also had a popular actor wearing a Platinum Daytona as well as they toured around his home in Austin.
