Anyone here ever buy a surplus or retired Police/LEO Interceptor?
Yup! I want one but doing my research its more about idle hours than mileage, apparently they're well looked after but cosmetically they're tired which is fine by me because scratches and dings are character lines.
Looking at a 2015-ish Ford Taurus/SHO with EcoBoost or a Dodge Charger 3.5L V6 Any advice? |

I would not buy any of the newer ones because they are not as well built I would suggest one of the newest Crown Vics you can find.

My buddy had an old Crown Vic with the light still attached near the mirror on the outside. He recently sold it because whenever he drove it people would slow down and drive 5-10MPH below the limit!

I would try to find one from a smaller department that might not have taken as much abuse as one from a larger city. These cars are run for hours at a time and are always on when you’re sitting inside. I can say from personal experience the old crown vics hold up a lot better than the Taurus or Fusions that are used now

If you go the crown vic route, make sure the gas tank issue has been addressed. They used to blow up when rear ended. The idle hours will be off the charts. Have someone that knows police fleet vehicles look at the car before you buy.

Why not just buy Ford in navy blue and throw some black steel wheels and a light kit on the grill and call it a day.

I ordered a brand new 2011 Ford Taurus SHO. This was before it became the Interceptor. That car was quick and rock solid. I sold it in 2018 with 105,000 miles on it and it was still going strong. In 7 years of ownership, only two minor recalls. I almost bought a new 2018 SHO but the car looked exactly like my 2011, so I passed.
I would probably just look for a used SHO or the Lincoln version, the MKS. Less abuse.

The crown Vic is the best built American car of the last 30yrs. There’s a reason they were THE cop car, taxi, etc. Just don’t be one of those guys who tries to make it look like the pd with antennae etc. I’ve also seen some folks cruising in the explorer interceptors too.. Sent using Tapatalk |

Thanks for the advice Gents.
I’m going to see a friend in AZ this winter who gets these off a Gov auction site. One thing he said was the electrical is a lot more robust, which is a thing people don’t realize when looking at a retired Extreme Duty car. |

Not advocating, but I have a colleague who swears by the crown vics. Had one himself many many years ago and purchased one for his each of his three eldest sons on their 16th birthday. Nothing fancy, but safe, dependable, and easy to maintain. That said, after the crown vic he got a mid-teens SHO and loved it. Good luck either way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Drove numerous models for almost 30 years, don't think I would buy one. The electrical systems are heavier duty to put up with all the computer and lighting, I believe the cooling systems are upgraded also. Not sure about the suspension. By the time we got rid of them, they were pretty beat. What kills them is when you have more than 1-2 people assigned to them. Cops are incredibly lazy when it comes to taking care of equipment. I got a car wash contract implemented and couldn't even get the guys to drive through the wash on duty!!! As for the insides......We would replace the majority of our cars every 2-3 years, sometimes hang onto them for longer if a detective or Sgt. were assigned to them. I was lucky. My Chief knew I took care of things. He's give me my choice, either a new car every year, or an older one that was just assigned to me. I always took the older one. Kept all my duty gear in it and kept it nice. Just went to a retirement party last week. Getting rid of all our Explorers and went to the Tahoes.
