Suburbs or City?

Currently suffering a move from the city to the suburbs and was wondering what everyone's preference is and why!

---

City for me! Prefer the energy, more going on, great food options, and can walk to most things. It does suck how little space you get even when spending a lot of dollars but living in a high rise is so cool. House comes with some nice features to make it easier to stomach being out here at least.

I’ll take the country (close to the city) any day

I get the whole energy thing, but I prefer this. Excitement is about an hour away if we choose to find it in the city

Feel you on that one. Was in the loop last year during COVID and the riots. Right off Michigan. It was wild to say the least.

I'm 37 miles west of Philly, it was quite rural when I moved there over 42 years ago, sadly Toll Brothers and others have found us ..........

City for me for the same reasons that the OP mentioned. The energy, more going on, great food options, Uber/Lyft is cheaper, and can walk to a few bars.

First ring city suburb for me. I want to be able to get downtown in minutes, but don't want to live in a condo.

Turn left at the suburbs and drive 10 miles or so. Cities are a nice place to visit.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually lived IN a city, as in downtown.

I’ve lived in a small city, LA at the beach, San Jose suburbs, wine country burbs, and LA burbs.

I’ve never lived in the downtown hustle and bustle, but the one thing I miss most is the Cheers type bar that I frequented in LA at the beach. That, I’ve never duplicated.

As someone who does a lot of cycling, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, the suburbs and beyond are preferred. Too chaotic in the city. It’s nice to visit once in a while, but the things I mentioned are not doable there.

Definitely not the city for me. I'm getting too old for the cities. Need something a little quieter and more relaxing.

City.

I live in the suburbs just on the edge of the city, but choose city for about the same reasons you mentioned.

Lived in the suburbs on the outer edge of Phoenix once. Took an hour to get to everything worth going to if not more, and drove me out of my mind.

Country for me. Sunset on my deck.

Nothing but corn fields where that sun is going.

Here’s the morning dog walk.

Just moved from the suburbs to the city, I’ll take city any day as long as I’ve got adequate space in my home. I love having a million things to do a short walk or cab ride away.

I’m in a unique spot. Within less than 30 mins I can be boating or sitting in the woods. Granted the woods are dwindling by the 100 acre a day or more around here. I love my area, old money and historic homes in established neighborhoods for the most part. I have a combination of suburbs, small city and country all wrapped up in one. They all are great for their own reasons. The family cabin in Tennessee is in the middle of nowhere and I get bored and stir crazy. I need options apparently.

Yup. City is Hell, country is Heaven, but the suburbs...purgatory.

I live in purgatory

I do like visiting cities though, and at one time I wanted to live in the city, but now looking to move somewhere near water, lake or Ocean.

I loved city life for close to 20 years (post college), but am very happy in the suburbs now. City is great when you’re young. With kids aged 10 and 8 now, the additional space, backyard, etc. make things so much easier and enjoyable. I do miss being able to walk everywhere, though. And stores/restaurants close so early in the ‘burbs! I really think it depends on what stage of life you’re in.

While my kids are in school and home, the burbs where we live is ideal. I have a 20 mile gravel bike path starting just down the street. That rolls through large estates and horse properties.

However, we also have a place in the mountains where we spend 75% of our weekends. This will become my primary residence as soon as the last girl goes to college. At that point, a nice urban pied a terre might be in order!
