For those that let SS go for PM

Curious for those that have departed 2 SS pieces to fund a PM at retail. Do you miss the SS versatility and cool factor or is the PM the end all?

However I do keep a small stable of SS but I don’t miss the ones I let go. Most of the ones I let go in SS I went for the PM version. So I got the best of both worlds

You’ll probably get a ton of people that will say no on the SS Daytona but I’ll differ. I’m currently chasing a RG Daytona myself and while having a 500, 520, and 523 I’d much rather have a 505.

Not like 505’s aren’t going to the moon currently too. MSRP at 39,350 and good luck finding one that’s not in the 60’s and up on new.

Upper 50’s preowned. Still not 3x MSRP like SS but if you’ve never had a full PM there’s nothing like it imo.

You could always get both back in a trade. RG Daytona’s and DayDates are straight up silly right now.

So do the deal. Take the PM for a test run and you miss em trade back.

Even I preferred PM over SS but I still couldn't let SS go, so I wear them in rotation.

I own all of the above watches that you mentioned and I would trade those 2 SS references for a RG Olive DD any day of the week. It’s just on another level

those 2 for a PM daytona, probably not. for the rose gold day date, 100% yes, but if you don't have any other steel watches you might miss having something more plain to wear

Traded plenty of SS and 2 tone for pm…………..never regretted it…..but I also had plenty of SS on the back burner…..

I’ve done it multiple times. Currently maintain a couple of PM but it’s critical for me to have SS as well.

If you like white metal, you’ll probably be wishing you had one SS for versatility.

First time I did it it was for a WG BLRO, back when they were $21 all day long. I found afterwards I wanted to add back a SS just so I’d have a lighter weight piece and also for something different - versatility. Don’t underestimate our ability to quickly realize one killer-awesome PM piece is not enough, despite convincing arguments we make to ourselves as we deliberate.

I would hang onto the one SS you love most and add the PM. If you can’t, I’d wait until you can add. Otherwise you may be kicking yourself, as you suggested.

Not in my case. The weight difference is subjective after say an hour, so frankly you don’t notice that your PM is a few grams heavier after that psychological adaptation period.

Does the PM feel any more special? Well, in my case I don’t like yellow nor RG, specifically because I don’t appreciate the connotations some have towards those wearing that color of gold. Hence, I only buy WG which to the untrained eye is SS.

I bought the smurf (now sold) because I wanted the blue bezel/dial on one of the best watches ever designed. I didn’t buy it for the WG.

I bough the YM II in WG because I detest the garish (in my view) blue bezel on this variant. The only variant without the blue bezel is the WG, so I bought that.

My old TT watch is a zenith Daytona I bought in the 90s. Back then gold was all the rage. I haven’t parted with it for sentimental reasons, but I rarely wear it (precisely because of the YG)

I bought a CHNR new from the AD to see if my mind could be changed concerning yellow or rose gold. It didn’t work and I sold it within 2 months.

Everyone all the hype beasts, influences and super stars have moved onto PM. Its more out of reach of the 90% of ppl that can afford SS and that in turn bring rarity. Not many ppl are willing to drop $50K+, $60k+ or more USD on a watch. That is HUGE money no matter who you are for a simple watch.

There is no ifs or buts about it. Get the PM piece you want.

Hard to answer. I went PM, but was for a Lange. It’s the watch I own that feels incredible and the best value proposition at its price point than anything else.

Still need the SS steel Rolexes.

Perhaps sell one SS and save or raise funds to rotate into the PM.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to outlay for a full PM reference, but have added a TT early this year which I am really enjoying, I will be adding a second in 2022.
I don’t ever imagine not keeping a SS.

If I moved to PM keeping both SS probably wouldn’t be feasible. That being said, the idea of moving into PM keeps building and building everyday. So many routes to go down. RG DD, meteorite GMT, RG Daytona with baguette markers. I’ll probably sit down with the AD after the new year and lay out my plans.

To me, precious metal is for the Day Date. YMMV

Starting to be really cautious wearing PM these days. Full yellow gold is my favorite piece and I love seeing others wear yellow gold too.

With that said I would try saving a little longer before divesting 1 or 2 ss pieces. Sure you can easily replace the ss pieces down the road, but they are yours now, just keep them in the family. Save, save, and save some more.

How important is PM? You have a choice between a PM Bulova or an SS Patek. Which do you want to own or wear? You have a choice between an SS Daytona or a PM Cellini.... Which do you want to wear? Bottom line is that SS is more durable scratch resistant and robust than PM and if you like the watch ....Nautilus, Daytona, Sky Dweller, whatever ...the material the case or bracelet is made of is not that important. I have both PM and SS pieces and for daily wear SS is best. No question.

For me, watch collecting is about versatility. Really happy and fortunate to own options in PM and SS and wouldn’t want to be limited to either.
