Can there be too much stretch?
Three months ago I did'nt know what stretch was, and after looking at the many images here I realise my 1983 Datejust, jubilee band, which I have worn literally every day for 26 years does have some stretch in the band.
I have had the watch serviced every five years, last time around three years ago. My question is, can there be too much stretch? ie is there a point where the bracelet will give up and let go? Is there a point at which it should be replaced? thanks for any advise. |

I have seen some that where teribely stretched out but still holding on. That being said i am sure there is a point where the band is compromised.

frequently the stretch is an erosion of the pins between the links being ground down and becoming much thinner than originally. The pins can be replaced if you can find somebody willing to do that..
As for stretching before something breaks...that does take quite a bit but you should inspect the edges of the links where they press against the connecting link-pins for cracks. Stretching is much more prevalent with the TT and solid gold bracelets because the gold is more elastic than the Stainless.

I guess so, as mentioned here: http://www.classicwatchparts.com/wat...?c=4&p=general
now it seems like my oyster bands are slightly loose than when I worn it the first day, which is about a month ago. |

I've had Michael Young repair two jubilees and a riveted oyster and am very happy with his work. Takes a while but worth the wait.

Emails to Michael are bouncing. I've emailed him at the address on his website (enquiry@classicwatchparts.com) and the messages get rejected " no mailbox here by that name".
Does anyone have another email address for him? |

Michael Young recently restored my Bark Finish President Band. You should be able to reach him at this email address: michael_ck_young@hotmail.com
He may not answer immediately, but should reply within 24-48 hours.

don't worry
The jubilee bracelets can last for decades after they start looking a little bit stretched. Also, if one of the stretched links finally breaks, you still have others holding the band together. If the problem is the pins, the amount of stretch isn't necessarily a good indicator of problems.
I agree that the gold links look to be a bigger problem where stretch is concerned. Still, I wouldn't worry-- I've had a 1973 and a 1947 watch, and each has been worn daily. Both showed stretch and neither ever broke. They're both still being worn by sons. |
