Advice Needed - Potential Move

Hello everyone,

I need some advice on a potential change to my watch collection. I'm considering selling my Speedmaster Professional to fund the purchase of either an OP 41 or an Air King. Here are a few reasons for my consideration:
  • Preference for Automatic Watches: I really enjoy having an automatic watch and prefer something that is waterproof.
  • Existing Collection: I already own a black SS Daytona and a BLNR on Jubilee. Given that I already have an iconic chronograph in my collection, I'm thinking it might make sense to diversify.
  • Financial Aspect: I understand I'll need to add some money out of pocket to move into a Rolex, but I'm okay with that if it's a good move.

Considering the above points, do you think selling the Speedmaster Professional and moving to either an OP 41 or an Air King is a good decision? Any insights or experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Whilst my preferred watch is Rolex, I’ve bought and sold and re bought a speedy a number of times now. At the moment it’s the only other watch in my collection which can hold any sort of candle to the Rolex models.

I like the backstory of the watch, the timeless design and the fact it can be worn on a number of straps. Although I don’t wear it much, I’ve decided to keep the Speedy in the collection.

I’d try to add one of the others if you can.

For me I wouldn’t be doing that trade.
I know everyone is different but I look at those two potential trades as the lower end of the Rolex range and I only say that because I prefer a more sporty watch. And I understand that you already have a couple of great Rolex references and they would offer you something different.

I wouldn’t sell the Speedy, I’d just further differentiate it from the Daytona by putting it on a leather strap. It might be a second chronograph, but it adds brand range to the collection.

Also, and while it might just be perceived, the manual-wind Speedy feels a little more robust than the self-winding autos.

If you still like the Omega then keep the Speedy as you will get killed on its trade in value.

I would keep the Speedmaster and just add. Trade values are soft right now for the Speedmasters and it is a watch that at some point will cost you more to put back into the collection.

If I had the same collection, I’d personally make the trade to a colorful OP41. Yellow , green, coral, etc…
I like the speedy, but with the two black dial chronos you have, the Daytona would be my choice every time I reached for a chronograph.

I would get the AK before the OP.

But, I would also consider a lighter colored dial - maybe the older white dial OP39 or a 16570 polar Exp II?

Your second point says it may make sense to diversify - selling the speedmaster and adding a third Rolex seems to be concentrating the collection on one brand rather than diversifying.

I wouldn’t do it for an AK or OP.

I’ve kept the Speedy having considered trading it a number of times. I like that it is manual wind, a nice change from my many autos. The Speedmaster is an anachronism among anachronisms, there is a place for it in my array of watches.

The watches you're considering are ok, but aren't significant additions, in my opinion. In composing a collection, the Speedmaster is more meaningful to me.

I would keep the Speedy. As I have gone bracelet heavy in my own collection. I see myself adding something that can be worn on a strap in future.

Love my speedy!
I find the AirKing to be one of the busiest dials from Rolex. The mix of colors, #s, fonts just does not do it for me.
You said diversity, if you sell your Omega you lose brand diversity.
OP41 is an OK watch, if you need something a little dressier that could work
Id keep things as they are but if you don't love your speedy you need to move it

I’m partial to keep that Speedy since you won’t get much for it in trade or sale.

If headset in trading, I’d go for a colorful OP to add variety to your rotation. I’d also suggest you take a hard look at the classically sized 36 over the 41.

Sell the Daytona, and keep the Speedmaster. Everything written above is true and accurate.

Your Speedy is "Waterproof"

One quick point of emphasis that I don't think anyone else picked up on – you mentioned wanting something waterproof as a reason for getting the OP or Ak over your Speedy, but your Speedy is as water resistant as most wearers will ever need. Should you dive with it? Probably not... but you could at shallow depths (without engaging the pushers). If you're simply swimming, sailing, or whatever other water activity, your watch is going to be just fine, assuming it's a modern Speedy that is within the recommended service window. The idea that you can't take one in the water is a common misconception on this forum.

Anyhow... I'm biased as a Speedy owner, but I agree with a number of the comments here about the Speedmaster's qualities (not to mention the delta of the simple fact that their resale/trade value is not great).

I think you'll wind up regretting this trade.

Why did you get the Speedy in the first place? For many there is a special appreciation of the history and story of the watch that I don't believe is matched by an OP or AK. Frankly, and I know this sounds crazy to most, but depending on what you really want out of a collection and how personally meaningful it is to you, with Daytona's selling in the 30k+ range, I might consider selling it to help finance the acquisition of a couple more interesting Rolex pieces than either an OP or AK.

Now, understanding that my suggestion is laughable to many, on a more serious note, I think I'd recommend putting some more thought into what it is about Rolex that you are wanting to experience. You already have an icon in the Daytona, (and frankly, another iconic piece in the Speedy, just on a different level to most). Would you even wear an OP with a Daytona sitting in your drawer?

I'd take a beat and reconsider.
