Calatrava vs. Royal Oak

Hi Guys,
I hope I can get some good advice here.

I bought a brand new PP 5127G 2 years ago and love it to bits.

Unfortunately, I spotted an Ap Royal Oak 15300R and fell in love with it as well. The only thing I don't like about the AP is it's heavy depreciation. Another issue is I already got another rose gold watch which I will never sell-PP 5711R.

I don't have other white gold watch so Im reluctant to let the Calatrava go!

Shame I cannot afford to have another watch and my safe at home is full!!

Many thanks for all your comment!

First of all, you have a fine collection there!

As for the 15300OR, although it's a great watch, I wouldn't give up the 5127G to get that. How about keeping your existing collection, and adding a steel Royal Oak? You mentioned depreciation: how about turning it into your favour, and picking up a LNIB or BNIB steel Royal Oak (15300ST) 25-30% under MSRP? 15300 has already been discontinued, so I reckon even NOS ones can be acquired at great discounts. If you buy a steel Royal Oak well under MSRP, depreciation will be negligible in the long run.

Royal Oak!

Would look great along side the 5711R.
As far as depreciation, you should be able to get a generous discount on the Oak.

I think we often feel like getting something different from time to time even when we already have something very special to begin with.

Personally I would keep the Calatrava.

Thanks guys for your reply.

The biggest concern is once I sold the Calatrava, I will be missing it as I do wear that watch to work-I sometimes rotates the Calatrava with my Rolex 114270 as both dials are simple and beautiful. (No one in the workplace will notice.)

I did think about the now discontinued black dial SS 15300 as the new version is going too far from its original design by Gerald Genta. However, the rose gold version with the black tapestry dial just looks stunning. It's more like a work of art than just simply another watch. My concern will be just like the 5711R, I will like it so much that it will end up being look at every weekend rather than being used.

The 15300 is such a stunning piece... You already have a PP, as long as you buy the AP right you wont regret it...

I have a rose gold Calatrava 5196 and owned the AP 15300. Its an apples-to-oranges comparison, but for me I only intend to have 1 dress watch and that will be the Calatrava (unless I can afford a more complicated Patek or Lange some day).

I never bonded with my blue 15300 and did a catch and release. For me it was kind of in no mans land between a dress and sports watch, and I decided for around the same money I'd rather have a Sub-C that I could wear every day.

That's exactly why you should go for the steel 15300 (instead of the gold one) It's a great everyday casual wear that you don't have to "baby" all the time.

I love the PP 5127, its my favorite Calatrava. Such a contemporary look with the crown guards.

The 5127G in WG is awesome! I wouldn't sell that for a Royal Oak...but if you like the other better....

Consider buying gold watches pre-owned, they all take a heavy depreciation (Patek less so) - you can get a "like new" one at a serious discount off retail pricing.

I would keep the 5127 as well. Hopefully some day you can add the 15300!
With that said either way you can't go wrong.

Thanks again guys,
After much soul seaching and research on prices etc.. I decide to keep the Calatrava (It's my 1st PP). I don't think I will go for a brand new 15300R unless there is one in a tax free area like airports. I am planning to go on holiday to Hong Kong towards the end of this year. Maybe I can pick one up at a much better price than UK!

For what its worth, I think that you made the right decision.

I believe that had you sold the 5127 you would always have regretted it.

But I am slightly biased!! :)

Regards

Tony

The verdict here is quite clear-cut!

Tony,
That watch on your Avartar looks beautiful and elegant-5205G?

My thoughts exactly. I have the 5127 in yellow gold and have thought of flipping it and getting the 15300 which would better compliment my lifestyle. I know that down the road I'd regret not having the Calatrava so best to save and get the R.O. later. Financialy it means much later.

PP is the right choice to keep. However, AP 'depreciation' all depends on where you bought it from to begin with. If you went to a AP Boutique with 0% off, then yes. If you bought from trusted TRF seller at 20-30% off, then you'd be in good shape from day one.

Congrats on the decision

Thanks Guys!
All these pictures start to temp me to go for another PP Nautilus. I had tried a 5712G (Dial looks too fussy) and the 5167R (Arabic no. too big on my small wrist). The only one left is the 5726 but I am uncomfortable trading a white gold watch with a SS one that cost thousands more. I am confident that Patek will bring out a 5726G but no one knows when. In the meantime, I am quite happy with the Calatrava-still look gorgeous when I look at this morning!

Keep the Patek 5127. Be patient and save for the 15300 and get a bank box to store the overflow in your collection.

Sorry Guys. I did the unthinkable and sold my 5127G to another watch enthusiast. However, I recently discover a watch that strikes the right balance between dress>sport. I can see this watch will be another keeper! I am looking forward to pick it up on my birthday this summer!
