The young gunslinger
One day in the old west, a young gunslinger came ridin’ into Tombstone. He hopped off his horse in front of the saloon and sauntered into the bar. Once inside, he loudly announced that he was the fastest gun around and challenged all comers to draw. The regulars paid little attention to him and continued their poker games and drinking.
One exception was an old timer sitting by himself at a corner table. The old timer snickered at the young man’s boast. This irritated the young gunslinger to no end, so he sauntered over to the old man and demanded an explanation. The old man said “Well, sonny, I’m not questioning your claim, it’s just that I can see right off that there’s room for improvement in your technique.” “What do you mean by that?” asked the youngster. “It seems to me that you could improve your draw speed by loosening up your gun belt and lowering your holster a touch.” “that will help me draw faster?” he asked. “You’re darn tootin’ it will!” came the reply. The young man shrugged, but decided to give it a try. He angled his belt on his hip so that his holster was closer to where his hand hung naturally. That done he drew his pistol quick as a flash and shot the hat right off the piano players head. “Wow, old timer, that really helped, what else do you suggest?” The old timer continued, “Well if’n I was you, I’d cut a notch in the front of the holster, so’s you can start swinging the gun up sooner.” “Will that help me draw faster?” said the young man. “You’re darn tootin’” came the reply. Without waiting further, the gunslinger whipped out his pocket knife and did as the old man had suggested. As soon as he’d finished he drew his pistol like lightening, fired, and neatly clipped the bow-tie off the piano player. “That worked great!” He exclaimed, anything else?” “As a matter of fact there is one more thing you might want to try. Go out back to the shed and you’ll find a can of wagon grease. Get a hand-full of it and smear it all over your gun.” The young man looked confused and said “will that help me draw faster?” “Well, no” the old man responded, “but that way when Wyatt Earp over there gets done playin’ the piano and shoves that Colt up your arse, it won’t hurt so bad.” |
