DD II: Last Questions Before Purchase

I'm getting cold feet. Help me make the right decision . . .

I have my eye on the DDII Gold/Champagne/Romans.

1. Is the DDII considered the "best of the best"?

2. Why are the gold Daytonas and gold GMT's the same price, if, the DDII is considered the best?

3. Is there a certain Model number to look out for?

4. Is the oyster band better?

Forgive me if these are silly questions. I'm still trying to educate myself. This is a big purchase for me. Thank you again, very much. I decide by tomorrow afternoon.

Big decision to make by tomorrow if you are not sure. I would try all the watches on that you like and you should have your answer. No Rolex is the best of the best, all the movements are as good as another with no major manufacturing faults. Best of luck with your choice and don't rush yourself into buying the watch until you are sure.

1. Is the DDII considered the "best of the best"?

By the many happy DDII owners... absolutely! By the owners of some other fine references, absolutely not! But the DDII is agreed to be a fine, premium model hovering in the upper end of the Rolex range.

2. Why are the gold Daytonas and gold GMT's the same price, if, the DDII is considered the best?

Well, didn't agree that it is considered that... Rolex apparently has an MSRP at which it is comfortable pricing the all gold GMT, Daytona, and DDII... there is always the platinum DDII!!!

3. Is there a certain Model number to look out for?

I believe 218238 is the DDII 18k?

4. Is the oyster band better?

Better than... ?

Happily/sadly most could only answers these questions with opinions.

Just PM'ed you about several of those questions, but for those I didn't touch on:

4 - The DDII is only available with the Super President bracelet, which is the most fantastic watch bracelet ever conceived and built by man, in my opinion. The DD is available with an oyster bracelet with some dials, but I think the DD is most iconic with the President bracelet. About the only downside I can tell you with the President or Super President is that they will "stretch" if not kept reasonably clean. The good news is that you only have to clean them in water with mild soap once every few weeks or once a month, and they should be fine.

Good luck, and don't bow out now. You'll love your President!!

Personally I would rather take just a little extra time now to determine if I am ready to commit than to rush into something I will regret later.

Just make sure it's what you really want, if so rest assured that the DD or DDII is one heck of a great watch.

^^Thank you guys for being concerned . . .

I have spent 10 days seriously thinking about this. I need to make my final decision tomorrow and either do it, or move on.

Domo,
the DDII on a President or Oyster is great..
Not to confuse but the top of the line is the Platty MasterPiece..
Just saying because you are concerned with the best available..
I tried my buddy's on and it was magic..

I love my DD on a President now but I want a Platty DD MasterPiece.

Ah, but even the Masterpiece is not the top of the line. Let us not forget about Dino's fully-iced Rolexes that run in the millions. And if you want the most expensive, true top-of-the-line Rolex, you'd have to call them to have your special order placed. I'm sure Rolex would one-off a piece if you really wanted the absolute 'best'

I totally get the Platinum is the best. I sooo should have explained that. I was simply addressing the DDII model. My goal is to have the Platinum at some point.

I was in your same position and have had the same concerns.. I have had every Rolex that I wanted except for the "president" which as a kid I have seen my family members have.. I have always wanted one but the 36mm was to small for my liking.. Now that there is a 41mm and now having the opportunity to own a day date.. I ordered one yesterday through Oscar "body bump"..good luck.. It's only money...lol

Make sure you are 100% sure what you want before you buy it. It sounds like you aren't if you still need convincing.

I like the RG DDII or a Daytona RG on bracelet.
I'm light skinned, freckle in the sun and never really
get a tan. I think rose looks better against my skin. If you are
Latino, Italian, or dark/olive skinned, I think the YG would be a good choice!
The Plat DDII would be the Ultimate Rolex tho'!

No the Platinum is not best the only difference between any DD11 is the price metal and precious stones and IMHO price don't equate to best.

A full-gold GMT2C will have more presence but the DDII on the president is classy. If it were my cash (and my opinion matters not) I'd get the platinum. I like two-tone SS/YG but full YG is a bit much.

Best regards,

Joe

Domo, take your time, no rush. Try them on and buy the one you like the most.. If however, you find the plat is what you really after then budget yourself out and get the one you really like. Seems like what you after is the best of what rolex can offer, to a certain degree, price wise, the masterpiece is pretty expensive and thet too come in 18KYG which are not far from DDII 18KYG. Note that the masterpiece is a tad smaller at 39mm (correct me if i am wrong) hence maybe will fit better if you have smaller wrist. .. Best of luck and whatever the outcome, keep us posted. Cheers! .. Jennifer

Get what will make you happy. Worst thing that can happen is that you don't like it and sell/trade it for something that will... at the risk of a financial hit. That's the deal with precious metal Rolexes.

Do take your time. If you need convincing, it is time to take a short break and rethink before making the decision. I have the WG DD II and have no regrets. WG is understated.

To make things more confusing for you, I am now thinking in getting a RG Daytona as my second gold watch. I had thought of getting another DD II but it is time for a nice Rolex sports watch.

My vote - Daytona but the decision should be up to you.

Good luck and let us know what you finally did.

YES.. Not sure if it is any different than a DD but the Masterpiece bracelet is so much better feeling than the President.. It is like a piece of art..

Why would you buy a watch or anything else that you are so struggling with???? This is something that you should enjoy and brings you happiness when wearing. Its not like the DD II is going away or hard to find so, before you buy or give yourself all sorts of deadlines, take a breath and make sure its something you really want and must have......otherwise, move on. You'll end up not enjoying it anyway if you're not sure.

Good luck!!!!!!

Probably it's too late now, but if you admire the Pt model above them all, then why not save up a bit more and go for your grail? If you get a gold DD II now, but still keep thinking about the Pt DD II, then eventually you'll sell the gold DD II (with a huge $$ loss) and get the Pt.

IMHO the most beautiful DD II is the Pt one. The glacier dial is pure class. If I had the MSRP of that model, it would be a very tough decision whether to get it, or go for a Patek 5170......
