Rolex Sub ND in line, should I still buy this Seiko Shogun?
Am very impressed by Seiko Shogun and mores after watching this review - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LRrvE1Zfzo
I have plans to buy Rolex 114060 by this summer (waiting for special occasion). I really wanted to get this Seiko SBDC007 Shogun but the more I look i think this will become obsolete once I get the Sub as it looks very similar. What you guys think? Are they too similar? Can they co-exist? * Borrowed pics |

In terms of looks they are very similar but the shogun is titanium and it is light - if that is important to you then the shogun might be useful as a beater or for situations when you shouldn't be wearing a rolex. I have a few seikos but not the shogun. They are reliable and very hardy. The 6r15 movement is very good and is easy to service. However I don't think titanium can be buffed like SS (experts feel free to chime in). Personally though if I was getting the 114060 soon I wouldn't bother with the shogun.

If the Seiko doesn't interfere with your purchase of the Subc then yeah why not?

For $150 I'd buy the Seiko but for over $1200? - seriously? - not a chance.

IMHO, get the Seiko MM300 SBDX001......it's the iconic Seiko dive watch.

I doubt that Seiko would get much watch time after the sub came home.

Wait until you get the Sub.
It will likely do away with the itch for the Shogun, and if not, add it after the fact. |

I disagree with most it seems. The shogun is spectacular and really shins on a NATO as the case lines are more pronounced. My seiko 6105, 6309, 7548, and previously sumo and shogun get plenty of time with a GMT and sd. I had to trade the sumo and shogun for the perfect 6105 but for sure will get another sumo and a MM300

I love seiko divers, but my thought is that if you are going to get the sub for sure, then you might as well wait until after and see if you still have the itch. If you do, then you can buy it and know that you really want it. If not, then you are stuck flipping or feeling some slight regret that you didn't wait… even if it is an excellent watch.

In my experience, never buy a substitute watch.
You will flip it likely for a loss. Save and wait for what you really want. I have bought and sold a dozen Seiko watches. They are all nice, they are all inexpensive. They never fill the true need or the want

The seiko does not matter ... if you want the Rolex, get the Rolex ... seikos are just good beaters...get them if you want. My budget for a seiko is about $200 ... that's all their brand is worth to me, no matter what the seiko model is. You can put a 3135cal in it, it would still be worth MAX of $200 to me...

My advice is to wait and get your Sub...the Shogun will most likely sit in your safe after that purchase. Good luck.

I would Hold out for the sub.
For me it would certainly get all the wrist time between the two. |

thanks guys.. yeah if it was 1/3 of its price I wouldn't have mind Shogun but price being over $1k is becoming the deal breaker if I don't end up using it later.

I agree -- hold off until you get the Sub. You'll never take it off.

I have SubC date and the Shogun. To me they are both great looking watches and wear comfortably.
The SubC looks nicer. The Shogun is more comfortable to wear. I bought the SubC last September. I bought the Shogun 2 weeks ago. Since then, I've worn the Shogun more. But that's me. Last edited by Ericcabs; 3 April 2014 at 06:41 PM.. Reason: Corrected to avoid confusion |

I suspect that if I was in your position, once I got the Sub, that's what I'd always want to wear.
The Seiko would be relegated to the reserves bench to be worn when the Sub goes in for service several years down the track. |

I think you're right to be concerned about wrist time vs a Sub. I watched the review, and the guy does a nice job. Things I like: titanium but looks like SS, low wt on the bracelet, non-thick bracelet, good looking like a Sub, and OK price. A titanium watch that looks so much like SS is very tempting, for me. The lightwt case can work well with the extra light bracelet.
Things that keep me from wanting one (I've got a Sub): hands strike me a ugly, also too short for the dial, compared to the Sub the clasp looks cheesy, I think that sitting next to a Sub, the Seiko will not look near as nice and it won't get worn enough to justify the price. If the Seiko offered a less Sub like look (maybe blue, for example), I would find it more attractive. |

If you need a beater I would go for a lower cost Seiko.
Save the extra money for your first service on the Rolex! |

If you love the Sub, and by the way, my 114060 is my go-to piece just about every day, then I wouldn't get any other model that is similar because it won't get enough wrist time.
I have enough trouble deciding which to wear every day and intentionally keep my purchases very different from each other, to suit different moods. |

While somewhat similar, they are actually very different on the wrist. The Seiko is great on straps. If you really want to change things up, get the orange dialed version if you can.

The Shogun is a great looking watch (one of the best from Seiko, IMO), but the 114060 is in a whole different league. If you think that both of them will get some wrist time, I think you should go for it.

Get the sub and then decide what's next. My guess is you will be more interested in looking at dress watches than another diver.

I would also wait for the sub to arrive and then decide on the seiko
