Rolex Cellini
I was hoping to get people's thoughts on the Cellini line. They are beautiful watches, the blue dial Cellini date is striking. Why is the line not more popular? Is it the price? Cellini seems like the rare instance in Rolex where it is lower than MSRP on the secondary market

Just my opinion, but just does not seem to fit the traditional Rolex look. For a dress watch, most would prefer the OP or DJ for much less money and get a more identifiable Rolex look.

I think the better question is: Why are SS sports models so popular?
I personally like the Cellini line, and obviously it sells well enough that Rolex keeps it going. I don’t have any numbers, but I’m not sure that it is any less popular than other PM Rolex watches. The crazy thing is that SS sports models sell on the grey market for a price that would get you a PM Rolex. |

I think it has to do partially with price on some of the models. I remember this being discussed awhile back here as well. Essentially you can spend just a couple grand more and get a Patek Calatrava which has greater history as a dress piece.

Rolex Cellini
Dress style watches in general aren’t currently trendy. This coupled with Rolex being commonly associated with professional sports style watches results in the Cellini line being underrated.
It’s a solid watch however and I would never let populatity become a determining factor for buying watches. |

It's not rolex's core competence. Tool watches (the sports models) are. The classic watches like the datejust and daydate are a dressy alternative to sports models without venturing too far from the design language of Rolex. But the Cellini line is a far departure. And that line also lacks any differentiating feature from other dress watches on the market. Cellini lacks any grand complications. There are plenty of better dress watches out there for your money.
That's my opinion. |

It's also why people have talked themselves into thinking an OP or a DJ is a dress watch. On the contrary - the Cellini is a proper dress watch. This is all IMHO, of course.
