Thank you for sharing those photos! Sure is different now compared to when I was there in the 70's. Well the dam is the same but the roads and the bridge are new. All traffic used to go over the dam!
I am shocked at the low water level. I understand if it gets too low there won't be enough pressure to turn the generators at the speed needed for max output. They tap the river upstream for water for Las Vegas I think. It's an amazing feat... |

Why is there white banding between the current water level and the apparent high water mark? Is that the result of acidification?
I don't know if it's an urban legend or not, but I heard that due to its mass the concrete is still not fully cured. |

Since concrete heats and contracts as it cures, the potential for uneven cooling and contraction of the concrete posed a serious problem. Bureau of Reclamation engineers calculated that if the dam was built in a single continuous pour, the concrete would take 125 years to cool and the resulting stresses would cause the dam to crack and crumble. Instead, the ground where the dam was to rise was marked with rectangles, and concrete blocks in columns were poured, some as large as 50 feet (15 m) square and 5 feet (1.5 m) high.[58] Each five-foot form contained a series of 1 inch (25 mm) steel pipes through which first cool river water, then ice-cold water from a refrigeration plant was run. Once an individual block had cured and had stopped contracting, the pipes were filled with grout. |

It is an astounding feat. Was there in the '60's and the scale is unimaginable.

That "bathtub ring" goes over the height of the dam itself so I'm really confused now.

The new bridge is an amazing engineering feat but almost pales in comparison when you look over and see the dam. Thankfully, it does make the drive to Vegas much faster without dealing with all the damn dam traffic.

I don't know why I'm first reading this thread just now, but I am glad I came across it. I was there before the new bridge, but didn't do the tour. Your pictures are outstanding! They not only capture the internal infrastructure but also the many different views outside, and the beauty of the sunlight on the "red rocks" near sunset.
The white band shows the severity of the decade-plus (maybe permanent) drought in the inner mountain westUS. |
