Incoming! New GS Ceramic Bezel Spring Drive GMT

Went to my AD today and picked up the new SBGE257. This is the green dial GMT with spring drive and ceramic bezel. Absolutely beautiful piece. Have to say that the thickness is there, I saw pictures and expected to wear thinner than the 14.7 (and it does wear thinner than expected, but not as much I was hoping), but certainly a noticeable thicker than the other watches in my collection.

Still love love love the piece, first watch bought sight unseen, and was so excited about it decided to do my first video/review on YouTube. Compared it with a few other watches in my collection, namely Batman. Cheers

Congrats, really beautiful GMT! Dial is a darker green than I thought from pics on the net.

Appreciate you posting the video with the side by side with your Batman. That Spring Drive movement is like butter.

Helpful side by side. Thank you very much for putting this together....a bit deflated from the thickness of this in comparison to the BLNR......But other wise it looks stunnning....quite a shame.

Congrats. Looks nice. I am very tempted to buy this one. Will drop by an AD this week to try it out. Am glad they made the case diameter 40.5mm.

Fantastic watch! Nice review too with comparing the aesthetics and size to some commonly owned watches. I agree, it's unfortunate that the bezel doesn't rotate. I'd be curious if there's an explanation for that.

Enjoy it!

Congrats.

I am a big GS fan, however when they are "strongly inspired" by Rolex I always get a bit disappointed, they are better than that. They have the capacity for more originality. The font on the bezel still looks very close to the Explorer II.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear it’s useful. Felt like there isn’t enough out there about GS, and this piece in particular which is really spectacular.

Agreed with the thickness. Definitely a drag they couldn’t get this to 12/13mm which would be amazing. It’s probably one of the last few things that GS needs to do to really bring more people on board. But I’m still really enjoying this watch.

Funny thing about spring drive - absolutely dead silent. Which is just abnormal. But at the same time so cool that there’s no escapement (which causes the ticking) and instead is just constantly spinning.

Btw - I’ll snap some wrist shots tomorrow in the sunlight. The green is definitely much greener in natural light. Indoor it has a much darker shade of green, and is a lot of times a really deep deep green.

Yep, agree that the fixed 24 hour bezel most certainly comes from the rolex explorer. Rolex is also the first that came out with the gmt complication.

Outside of that, the design language is very GS that lines with up with their “Grammer of design” all the way back to the 60s, before the Rolex Explorer was even released. Multi faceted indices, hour and minute hands that catch the light in a really unique way. High mirror polish Zaratsu finishing. Flat dial, with of course the super clean sweep of the spring drive.

I’m going to try and get out to my AD this afternoon. He’s got the Blue and the Black in stock. I love the green but I already have a SBGH 271 “Summer” with a green dial.

Leaning towards the blue. But, I’m wondering if I can get over the lack of a rotating Bezel.

How much lume does that GMT have? Any chance we could get a lume shot, or of the display case back?

Lovely watch but I can't get over the placement of the date on the dial. I wish they would/could have put it at either 3 o'clock. Not sure if the movement forced them to position it at the 4 o'clock slot. Congratulations, though! It's a fine piece.

Yea, this movement has it at 4oclock. It was introduced by Seiko awhile back that started with the divers for comfort, so the crown doesn’t dig into your wrist. Definitely different - I’m a functional tool watch guy, so I do appreciate it and like the uniqueness

Posting some new pictures, and I just have to break up the posts because this watch is just amazing. Wearing it for a few days now, it’s really captured me.

I never quite understood GS’s “Polishing light” concept from their Grammar of Design when reading about it. But after getting this watch and wearing it, I think I get it now.

Check out this picture. Can you believe it’s 14.7mm? The polish is so fine with an undistorted mirror finish. That’s the Zaratsu polishing and how GS plays with light. The shadow that’s created just hides the watch. Then the ability for the multi-faceted indices and hour/minute hand is able to catch the light.

It’s freaking stunning.

Some pictures in different lighting condition. Crazy the variation of almost black to a forest sunburst green.

One of the pictures I put it half in light half in dark.

Lume shots here. Sorry iPhone X sucks in the dark.

No display case back, it’s a stainless cover.

Great piece. Seiko has been putting the crown at 4 o'clock on automatic models since the early 60s (Seikomatics, etc) and the first automatic Grand Seiko had one there, too, in 1967. These were more to accentuate the lack of need for a winding crown than for comfort, and were flush with the case, but the divers - from 1967 onwards - were/are surely for comfort as you say, as the crowns were more prominent
