My choice would be the sub, hands down. Just personal preference, no other reason. Both are very nice watches.

Sub because it's iconic , it has glidelock and the bezel looks better (IMO)
However I REALLY need a date function (bought a 114060 because of looks and it drove me nuts not having the date) so I would probably go with the explorer just because of the date function. If the SubC Date was an option I would choose that one hands down. Both are great watches so you should get whichever one you like the best. Good luck and let us know what you choose! |

Looks like we need a break from the streak here...for me, Polar definitely.
Black dialed watches are starting to get a little boring a watch is meant to be worn |

Not sure what you mean by too many issues? It boils down to personal preference. Dollar for dollar, you are getting more functionality with the Ex II, IMO. A date and a second timezone for no extra money. Plus, I think the proportions of the modern Ex II are better than the modern Sub. However, don't let logic drive your decision. This is not a logic driven hobby. What logic person would spend this kind of money on something that simply tells time ;) Get what sings to you. |

Buy the watch that instantly puts a smile on your face.
For me that was the explII. |

I think the first question to answer is whether or not you require a date feature in this purchase. I'm guessing the answer is no, since you're considering the no-date Sub at all, but still, that's a threshold question. If you do, then the Exp. II wins by default (unless you would consider a Sub Date). I would encourage you to really think about it. I bought a Seamaster 300, which is only offered without a date, thinking I could get along without a date feature. As great a watch as it is, I - like Bigsykedaddy - found myself continually annoyed by looking at my wrist and not being able to know the date. That became a major factor when I was deciding between an Exp. I, the 114060, an the 116610. I went with the 116610 and haven't regretted it for a second.
You're used to some fairly good-size watches. The Sub might feel a bit small in comparison. The Exp. II would make for an easier transition when you switch between watches in your current collection. That said, either Rolex would be a significant step up from what you currently have. I don't doubt that the Rolex will end up defining your collection, so you may not want to let the other watches dictate which one you choose. I suspect whichever one you go with will get the lion's share of your wrist time. (Although the Aerospace is definitely a great watch in its own right.) All that said, I think the Sub is THE classic daily wearer. It's appropriate for just about any occasion, and is both wearable and practical. The Exp. II, for all its strengths, is more sporty, more bold, and less universal. Good luck with your choice. |

There is no "right" answer. Buy the one you like best.
For me, Sub. Clean, classic, tough. I had a previous generation Exp II that I flipped towards an LVc. The bezel was too prone to scratches (for me). Five years later, my LVc insert is pristine... have to love the ceramic. |

Both awesome, but I would pick the EXII (because of the date function)

Try them and see. Personally, I prefer the exp in black as like the size. Only you can decide and if you ask that question here you will always get the sub coming out top. No wrong choice imo.

I started my Rolex journey with the no date sub and absolutely loved it. To me it is a perfect everyday watch and a classic, I sold it because I wanted to try something else though, ended up with a black explorer 2 and never looked back. You can not go wrong with either of these choices.
Do try them out first though as there is a slight size difference that might end up being deciding factor. |

I have always been a Submariner fan and have owned them all. The ND is one of my favorites and a can't miss in a collection. With that said, I own the Explorer II Polar and can tell you that it is a unique watch and in it's own right is just as cool and wearable as the sub. I think for me it is the white dial, I own a lot in black and blue, that sets this watch off. The 42mm case is nice also. I also do not see the Explorer II out and about like I see the Subs so that also is a plus for me. The safe move is the Sub, the fun move is the Polar Explorer II. No wrong answer. I look forward to seeing an incoming for your selection.

For a first or only Rolex you cannot beat the Submariner. The Polar is gorgeous as well, so it could be #2

The 114060 was my first Rolex. And it is a great choice coming into the brand. However, after a few more in the collection, the polar seems to be more interesting. Just depends where you are in the Rolex collecting mindset.
Definitely try both on and see which one you gravitate towards. The glidelock is amazing, but can't argue the uniqueness of the polar among a sea of subs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

I really like the Polar, owned one for a period even. But if you're going to have 1 Rolex in the collection, imo, it's got to be the sub! Good luck with the decision, they are both amazing.
