Fake Encounter at the AD

I’m talking to my watchmaker at an AD going over some work with a Vacheron Overseas, Rolex Yacht-Master and TT Daytona that are laid out on the case in front of us. An older gentlemen approaches holding this gold colored fake Submariner, says excuse me, and asks to have a link removed. My watchmaker and I are both probably too polite, but this is how we handle it. My watchmaker says I am not supposed to work on these, but quickly removes the link. The guy asks how we knew? We each point out three things immediately, blue crap covering crown as they can’t make a crown, look of gold, lugs, dial font edge, and on and on. The guy seems to have understood the subtext of the message “it’s a piece of crap”. The guys responds, well it was only $100, and I respond well you threw away 100 bucks. If you would of bought a Rolex, you may have even made some money. I then tried to educate. I said, us watch guys have respect for people who buy a watch that looks like a Rolex such as Invicta as although they “get close” they are a real watch company that proudly display their company name.

So now I’m driving home thinking about this guy, and I start to get a tad upset. I mean the balls on this guy to go to a Rolex AD with a fake to get a free link removal. I’m glad I didn’t get upset at the guy, but dealt with it some semblance of grace. Now that a few more hours have passed, I find it pretty darn funny. It will give my watchmaker and I something to talk about next time we go out to lunch, and is good thread material.

I can't believe someone would knowingly bring a fake in to an AD.

I would have ran him out.

The AD should have charged him $50.00. If he squawked the AD could have told him that his fake promotes terrorism and to take it back to where he bought it for service.

I agree and if he had a problem with that then, take it from him as it is a Rolex fake and therefore brand infringement and destroy it there in front of him or her also, "stating that his fake promotes terrorism"

Then turn around and offer the person a discount on a real Rolex!

Integrity is something we do when no one else is looking. I don't bear grudges to those who wear fakes. I know it feels much better to be wearing something as excellent and respected as a genuine Rolex. You will never get that with a fake.

You'd be surprised, it happens all the time. I had a funny one this past weekend. A lad, clearly trying to show off to his mates, brought it what was supposed to be a Daytona, and asked if I could tell if it was genuine or not. I said "Sure," and took the watch off him. Gave it a quick look over, and 5 seconds later, gave it him back - it was that bad a fake, one of the typical "Rolex Winner Ad Daytona" jobbies. I said this is genuinely fake, and it was as if you could see his ego and bravado crumple in a second - of course, his mates thought it was hilarious. I then spent a bit of time explaining what was wrong with it, as well as talking about the real one for a little bit.

It was quite a funny fake, and certainly livened up my Saturday

Some people seem to think that because it has "Rolex" on the dial, it gives them the right to be treated the same way as a real Rolex owner. Again, happens a lot

Could it be that he was so clueless, that he thought the AD wouldn't notice that it was a fake?

I'm not a big fan of fakes, nor of the people who buy them.

I seriously doubt that I would have been able to be so 'kind' to this 'gentleman', who was obviously hoping the AD was too stupid to recognize it was a fake even when it was in his hand. In the end, I imagine the 'gentleman' thought he 'got away with it', ast least to the extent he got his piece-of-crap serviced for free by a Rolex AD. A mistake, imho.
