Work in Brussels but live in the Tienen - Jodoigne area, originally from the coast (West-Coast rules )

One of these days I will take the time to introduce myself correctly in stead of secretly browsing this forum

Try Pierre Marcolini if you are in Brussels ( Sablon / grote zavel ) ... out of this world
If not the more known ones like Neuhaus and Godiva

Duvel is not the best one!
depending if you like strong (dark beer) or light beer, for strong, Rochefort, Bon secours..
. are very good, for light, I don't know
for Chocolate, we like (especially my wife ans my daughter - 2 year old) Galler.
they make very particular chocolate as curry, rose...

I love Duvel , the thing is they had to alter the way they made the "real" stuff years ago . I still remember when the fermentation was not stopped before bottling . So you really never knew how "strong" the stuff was . Nowadays, because they started exporting a lot of it ( the Moortgat brewery has been bought up by interbrew that now became interbev I believe ) the Duvel is limited to 8.5% vol.
Moortgat brewery used to have lager on draft too , but that is no longer available .. god that stuff was good and we really used to down them at a serious pace in a small café in Deurle .. memories .. memories

How nice is it when you can jump into the car and get to Brussels, Antwerp or Brugge within 1,5 hours ?

I really like the Dutch mossel prepared in Belgium or the Pork chop stew...mmmmm , together with a nice Juup (Jupiler Beer)

Almost ALL chocolate in Europe is made from "Barry Callebout" chocolate , with this ingredient it depends on the "arts artisanale" of the chocolatier.

When visiting Belgium you MUST buy a box of them chocolates but make sure you buy real Belgium pralines. Some sellers in Belgium even sell Chinese made......really!!

Whenever one of our fine TRF members visits Amsterdam give me PM , we'll go out and visit Flanders.
When flying back from Schiphol : You can buy the cheapest Rolex over there , Gassan sells the Daytona for 6550 Euro (When flying outside the EU)

JJ : Is it legal to import chocolates and beer into NZ, or aren't they as freakin strict like Australia ?

Jack

Jack we have a few people importing the real stuff from Brugge (or at least they say). You can always send a box of chocs here that has been factory packed.....beer is another story, we are taxed on alcohol %. Duvel in a cafe here costs about AUD15 per bottle!!!

Tristan, i wish i tired the stuff that was still fermenting in the bottle....

Fred, I love trappiste beers like Rochefort...Chimay is not too bad either.

That's the problem , real Belgium chocolates (Bon-bons) are made by hand , just like art (Produit Artisanale)
They just don't come in a factory packed and sealed box.

Calm down you Border Security maniacs (hahaha), I'm not importing a snake's head from China and an Alligator his ass from Thailand and some mariuana butt from Holland , just a box of Belgium finest chocolates

Real Bon-bons should also be kept cool (<7) because the presence of cream.

We sell the Duvel for about 1 Euro a bottle (0.33) and the 0.75 liter one-way for about 3 euro.
These are wholesale prices though obtainable for consumers

I have to correct you as Moortgat is NOT part of Anheuser Ambev, but still seperate and independant. Furthermore they just bought De Koninck Brewery which is famous for its "bolleke" which is the local Antwerp beer.

@Fred: no i did not buy a T-shirt, however I never say No to good beer

My favorites: West-Vleteren 12° (not commercially for sale or at 10-12€ for 33cl) and LaChouffe

Everyday is a learning day

@ fred: WestVleteren (all three of them) can be tasted at the Brewery itself where they have a visitor center www.indevrede.be in West Vleteren in the beautifull country side of West Flanders (of course I'm biased) , furthermore you can order them by phone www.sintsixtus.be but it is very burdensome to get in and then you to get it there. Theoretically you agree not to re-sell the beer.
It is one of the eight official Trappist beers but the monks in WestVleteren only produce to self sustain not to make huge profits.

FYI: six others from Belgium: Orval, Chimay, Westvleteren, Rochefort, Westmalle and Achel

In Brussels there are maybe two place who sell them occasionally. And in Bruges there is pub with over 400 beers for sale, called Cambrinus might have it.
