Why Does The Submariner Only Come In Black Dial?
But we see many dial colors and configurations in the Submariner Date?

I've wondered this too. I wouldn't be surprised if that's a gap Rolex is aiming to fill at some juncture.

I wonder if this post is a genuine question, or just another effort to assert that the term "submariner" should be used only for the no-date model.
But the answer to the question as offered is this: the dateless sub is the base model. It's presented as the entry-level sub, and so doesn't get more premium options. That's the same reason you don't see it in two-tone or gold. (And, yes, many folks on this forum -- including me -- actually see the missing date as a good thing, but that's nonetheless not how Rolex is positioning the product.) |

With all of the new changes and evolutions of the Sub I've always wondered why myself.

I’m guessing it’s just the way Rolex gets customers to spend more money. Why charge more for a 116610LV than a LN. I’m sure the production cost is about the same. It’s just a sales technique to keep you going up the spending chain.

The Sub has stayed traditional. It was the last of the line to be brought into the ceramic era. Even up to that time, it still had stamped end-links, lug holes, and the basic flat blade extension bracelet.
No real reason to change the formula when they still sell every one they make almost instantly.

Why Does The Submariner Only Come In Black Dial?
My guess: Hans was a great admirer of Henry Ford - “any color you wish, as long as it’s black.”
I think it is legendary now - until the Polar Sub comes at Basel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

The Sub is for purists.
At least that's a good enough reason for me.

I believe it is because the Sub is a entry level Professional watch like the Exp. Also this maintains the iconic nature of the watch as it is an icon. Rolex has a number of icons but this and the Explorer are the most rooted in adventure.

The Submariner is a classic design from a classic brand.

I think the submariner wouldn't be as desirable if more dial options were available.

Good question. My guess is tradition, plus the Date models have some dial variation.

As much as I'd love a green ND, I say don't mess with a classic. The luster will be gone.

I shed a tear when I saw the two tone Sea Dweller. I was also disappointed to see the cyclops appear on the SD 43, but I get it at a practical level as I can't read the 1665 date window without my reading glasses these days!
Leave the Submariner alone in it's unique space - black dial, black bezel inset and stainless steel. Let the Sub Date have all the 'colourful' choices (if you can find a reasonably priced one)! |
