Adding a Vintage Sub, Pepsi, or Root Beer to Collection

Hello Rolex Fam! Hope the new year is treating you guys well! I’m looking to add a vintage piece to my collection. It will be my first vintage piece. Something within the last 30 years or so.

Are there any particular references that you would recommend I look into? Forgive me for the newbie question, but there are so many that I really have no idea where to start.

I’m looking for either a sub, Pepsi, or root beer. Not looking to spend an arm and a leg, either.

Your insights would me much appreciated! Thanks!

Unfortunately, “vintage” is code word for “arm & a leg”....lol, j/k....kind of. Your budget/price range will mean a lot for references to be recommended IMHO.

The good news is that the last 30 years are really not vintage. Most of the Rolexes in that range will have close to modern movements. Some of the older ones will have tritium hands/faces and dead lume but some people go for the "patina" thing. If you shop around you should be able to find a five digit in your price range. The four digits are all over the map depending on condition but have more of 'vintage-y" feel. HQ Milton is sort of the go-to to get an idea on price and condition for vintage. It also depends on how authentic you want the piece or are willing to settle for service hands and faces, polished, no box and papers, etc.

Well.....$10,000 doesn’t do much for “vintage” Rolex. Or at least the technical definition. You’d be hard pressed to find something for under that. My recommendation....Find yourself a vintage Tudor Submariner. You’d be very happy as the case, crown and bracelet will all be stock Rolex parts and keep yourself under $10,000.

It sounds like you would be interested in early five digit References. For instance 16610 Submariner came out in 1989. GMT 16750 introduced 1981. So if you want to hover around 30 years old then here are two examples. The issue becomes, authenticity, and service parts. Best is to buy from dealer who sell vintage, HQMilton, MathewBain, Eric Wind. Tell them what you are looking and how much you want to spend. 10K may not be enough but a good start.

You can find some very nice, totally correct GMT 1675 root beers for under $10,000 if you know where to look.

I've been looking into vintage a bit too lately, but seem to be finding nice pieces to be in the area of $15k at least when looking at four digit subs with all original parts. Haven't really starting researching GMTs yet though. Happy hunting!

Adding a Vintage Sub, Pepsi, or Root Beer to Collection

Very interesting. Thanks for the insight! I know Mike at Rolliworks sells some pieces that he services with a 2 year warranty? Any of these good options? Right around 10k also!

I have a birth year 5513 maxi dial and absolutely love it. There’s something special about some of the vintage pieces.

Could look at a matte 16800. Vintage watch with some of the more modern features like sapphire, quickset date and high beat movement.

16718 Serti. I added this to the collection last year. Definitely a wild card, but I love it.

Quite a bit over budget but arguably the most exquisite Rootbeer I’ve ever seen - in the classifieds now;

I was going to mention that since I saw it on IG but wasn't sure if we could mention other peoples sales.

BUT... A happy customer from Rolliworks.

16800 has my vote too for the $10k vintage budget.
