hey guys, my aunt is looking to buy an inexpensive but decent watch for her adult son. apparently he's pretty rough on stuff. i suggested a g-shock, but she wants to get him an analog face, steel case & bracelet watch $500 cad max. so i'm steering her towards either a citizen or a seiko. couple of questions: would a solidly cased-up eco-drive (like a diver's version) be a durable choice - would it survive a construction worker's abuse? and how about one of those mech seiko divers (skx007) with the 7s26 movement - can they take a real crap-kicking?

insights would be welcome.

As you said, a GShock is truly her best bet.

I would say to stick away from anything Eco-Drive.
Everyone I know that owns them has problems and when they break they
cost almost as much to fix as to buy new.

The Seiko divers watch would be a good choice.

Which I had some other suggestions.

I think Casio at least in the UK produce g-shock's with an analog face. I saw one with a Crono function and part ss case. Rubber strap though!

For my money, I would buy a Seiko diver. But I'm biased on this one

Mine has stood up to anything I've thrown at it for the almost three years that I've had it, and I'm not too easy on it. Plus the lume is fantastic. Good luck

Seiko divers I have herad are tough and that 7s26 movement is especially constructed with ruggednedd is mind..I have read it has good shock-absorption and resistance and is reliable....but I have also read Seiko movements are not as accurate as citizen miyota movements...otherwise, Seiko Black Monster, SKX779 is a perfect watch for him..I am looking for one for myself too..its a good watch

I love g-shocks and have two but I think they are not the look that is 'giftable', just my opnion...the bracelet seiko diver with MECH movement is a more 'giftable' watch for a grown up I feel..just my feeling..he will love it m sure :)

My vote goes to Seiko. Very sturdy watches made for the working man. Their diver's models are top quality. Citizen makes some great dress watches, though.

from what i've heard so far, i'm leaning towards steering her to a seiko diver.

I have owned many Citizen & Seiko divers (currently still have 2 Citizen analog divers & 4 vintage Seiko divers)...and can say the Seiko diver on metal bracelet would be my vote based on what your aunt is looking for in a gift. The Seiko divers are real work horses and when equipped w/ bracelet look very sharp IMO. I would recommend she does some further research though regarding 'bang for her buck'...they start in the $100-$200 range & can run well above $1000 depending on model. Cheers.
