question on model year and authorized dealer

so i got a rolex watch from my wife and i love it but first issue i had was that the bracelet had some scratches on it even though it was supposed to be new and never worn.

so i told the authorized dealer and shipped it back and the ad fixed all the scratches and it shines like new.

but this got me curious as to whether he was trying to sell a used or pre-owned model to me. so before i confront the dealer, i'd like to get some opinions

my wife got the watch in october 2014, she asked for a new watch, he told her we just got some brand new watches in. but when i check the serial number online, it says 2011 model year.

so is there an explanation for this type of lag between model year and calendar year? or is a fast one being pulled on me?

so on my official rolex card that has the serial number, it is 8 digits long starting with a number. but on the green paper case that holds the card and instruction booklet, there is a separate 7 digit long string of characters beginning with a letter. this looks like it was added on separately with a labelmaker. i'm not sure if this is done by rolex or the ad, does anyone know what the labelmaker number is about?

thanks

I guess you used the serial number database search thing at bobs watches or some other equally useless online "service"? They always give eight-digit random serial numbers as 2011, even though the watch could have been sent out from Geneva last month.

ah ok, that makes me a little more comfortable. and yes you're right. used bob's and another site. having both returned as 2011 seemed to confirm it so made me a little nervous

do you know if official rsc will be able to tell me the history and exact details about my watch?

RSC? Probably. Anyone else? No.

Probably not, they are not usually that helpful. If your watch came with a warranty card tnen its guaranteed for two years, so you're fine really. What model is it?

If it came with a warranty card with serial number the same as on the watch and stamped by the AD on the date of purchase, it's a new watch. Maybe it had been tried on in the store. Rolex bracelets can get scratched very easily.

thanks old expat beast. i appreciate your patience and replies.

what do you mean by stamped? the warranty card has the jewelers name on it typed in the same font as the serial number, but my name and date of purchase was written by pen

I'm sure it's new. ADs don't forge or create new warranty cards for used watches. And the price of a used 116520 is too close to the price of a new one to make it worthwhile to pass it off as new.
