What are the chances?

First time posting, I am interested in an Explorer II 42m Polar. But was wondering if the members here think that there is a potential that the Explorer II will go the same way as the Daytona, replacing the the steel bezel with a black ceramic one? Or is the steel one too iconic?

Have not seen this asked before, if so my apologizes...

I understand why you are posing the question, but honestly only Rolex knows that. The Daytona had a steel bezel for quite a while and is also an icon. I don't think the EXP is above getting its bezel ceramic-a-fied, but who knows when...

Good question and one I've contemplated myself on a number of levels.

As usual only Rolex knows,
However, I believe Rolex would be in error to change the EXP II bezel from the current SS offering.
The SS is as rugged as it can possibly get with outstanding serviceability. Ceramic whilst prettier would be a liability.

Wow, I have the 40mm Polar Exp II, and want to buy the 42 mm in black. I certainly hope they don't so to a ceramic version (or maybe I do). I love the stainless bezel.....it just adds to it's simplicity.

To answer your question: probably slim to none. But, hey, anything could happen, right?

No, not while the GMTc lives and thrives, similarly I don't think an Exp will ever receive any PM content, it will stay as is I feel.

I don't see what the GMT has to do with the EXP.

i agree with the above posts, but think its a possibility, considering the ceramic is still somewhat new and the Explorer II is the only sports watch that hasn't received the upgrade of ceramic minus the yacht master ss which has precious metal only bezels... Maybe basel 2017?

I love the looks of the Expy II 42mm polar too but as of now, leave it alone because its perfect in its own rights.

Exp 2 is all brushed and meant to look like a tool watch. One of the only Rolex toolish watches left. Highly doubt they would remove this niche by putting a shiny ceramic bezel on it.

It may look a little off? Would not feel too much like a tool watch with a ceramic bezel IMO

There is always a chance.

The real question is do you want the want now as is? Or do you want to wait?

Think it would look great

The GMTc is a 40mm watch and Explorer 2 is 42mm, so the ceramic bezel would bulk it up a bit, which I'd like and still be different

I agree that an EXII with a black ceramic bezel would be too visually similar to the GMTII. The daytona has a history of having a black bezel in the 6240, 6263, etc. and they previewed the ceramic bezel on the PM daytonas.

I just don't see Rolex changing from the SS bezel on the EXII. The only thing I kinda wish they would do would be like a hardened steel, tungsten or maybe even some composite ceramic like the Omega Grey Side of the Moon, whereas the material is improved without changing too much of the aesthetic of the traditional EXII. But Rolex has not really been known to have too much variety in case/bezel materials.

pretty low if rolex has any sense

the explorer is meant to take a beating and still look good after doing so

steel bezels can be bashed 1,000 times and will show 1,000 scratches afterwards but will still be intact and able to do their job...ceramic bezels can be bashed 999 times but that 1 in 1000 "perfect" knock can destroy it...imo for the explorer the steel bezel fits the intended usage of the watch far better than a ceramic

Is there another Rolex with a brushed steel bezel? I can't think of one off the top of my head. If there isn't, then I think it unlikely that Rolex will make that change. Even if there is, I think it will be years, if ever, before this change is made. Regardless, if you like the current iteration, get it. A cool watch that likely will hold its value well (as has the prior iteration of the Ex II).

As a tool watch (spelunkers watch) that it is it does not makes sense (to me) to make the bezel from something "soft" as ceramic. The bezel has to be steel and "fixed position" in order for the orange hand to inform the user if it is am or pm on the "outside" world.

Cheers

Why mess up the perfect under the radar watch with a ceramic bezel? I love mine without the ceramics.

Ceramic in watches is most certainly not something new brands like Rado have making ceramic watches since the 1960s.Yes today the so called high ends brands are now jumping on the latest ceramic fashion.Ceramic in not a wonder material yes it has its plus side but has many minus sides. Like huge cost to replace if broken like $1000 just for insert only of the ceramic pepsi insert models.

i prefer how it looks now, but was just wondering if a ceramic bezel was a possibility maybe with the introduction of a new movement with longer power reserve...

I own an exp II polar...my first Rolex and my everyday wear. I don't think I'd want a ceramic bezel but call me crazy I would much prefer that the bezel be polished rather than brushed. I'm on my second bezel. The cost to replace at RSC wasn't that much but...

EXP + C = GMT

Great in theory; but I think it may be a double dip for them and uneccesary in the lineup. Someone mentioned there are no PM Explorers, and that tickled my fancy... Sure, it wouldn't be as 'rugged' just as the ceramic tilt; but heeeey I'd try one on! I'd love to see a mock-up.
