14.5 million cctv cameras in London and surrounds resulting in most people being seen 7-12 times a day. Cameras did not prevent the crime, just provided an eye witness. Too much intrusion for my liking.

Excellent video. They really believe in video surveillance in the UK.

You should try living here.
That is my local AD and I have actually worked in the CCTV center in Maidstone, Kent and it is amazing what they can see.
If you are walking along picking your nose they know about it.
I used to walk through the town back to the car park waving at them and they made the camera's move like a nod of the head to acknowledge me.
I found it funny, but in reality it is far to much Big Brother.
I guess though, if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.

This is ridiculous big brother stuff, and it seems to me that the camera operator was zooming and panning as the incident unfolded. Do they really have that many operators doing peeping toms?

no sympathy for these total idiots, i think 16 years is not enough.

I have met the manager of this AD a few times and he is one great guy, always willing to help and advise.

his only frustration is not enough stock to sell....

They have 2 operators usually, but about 30 screens some of which are quartered.
They can move from camera to camera and follow people.
They can zoom in for facial recognition if the person is close enough to the camera.
It covers the whole town center and just outside.
They also have radio links with a lot of the shops so they can follow and warn other stores before suspected shoplifters get to them.
Unless you have seen it in operation you wouldn't know (and most people don't) how good it is.
The operators are in direct contact with the Police and guide them in to catch their prey.
Maidstone is a small town considering.
London must be a completely different story.
If there is a similar system in central London, be afraid, be very afraid!

"sleepwalking into a surveillance society"

it's troubling: courts in the US tend to favor cctv as well

That's crazy, talk about having no plan in place. I'm amazed one of them was given 7 years in jail, as this week we also so a guy getting 27 months for manslaughter http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7676117.stm, so for a bungled robbery you get 7 years, for taking a life you will be walking the streets in just over a year

loved this video...

As far as the 'Big Brother' watching you....I think it might be a fair trade for a bit of extra security and piece of mind....

Only the guilty conscience needs to fear this...

similar happened last year in vancouver, a rolex ad in a shopping mall

http://www.ganeshkartik.com/ReadNews...d=00407&Type=1

i visited them a month ago looking for a gmt2c half hour before they closed, the lady there was reluctant to open the door for me before seeing me wearing a sd, i then entered the store and that lady said all watches were in safe and since the security guy went off they didnt want to do any more business that day, and the mall policy required them to open til 6pm so they had to keep "open" eventho no more watches there. gonna hate those robberries

effectivley freedom has been traded for a modicum of security, the result is you end up with neither. Now UK going to spend 22.1 billion pounds to monitor all email, web sites messages , chats etc I know its for our own good comrade. All in the name of defeating terrorism.

What used to be the pillar of democracy is now the prison of democracy, and their powers of intrusion grow daily. A article in a London Newspaper i early 2008 tells how two children were charged with "anti social crimes" the first for using chalk to make a hopscotch game on the sidewalk, the second was charged for riding his bike on the sidewalk.

Anti social crime???? a nice catch all isnt it.
