Question about Day Dates

Hi guys,

I'm starting to research DDs. Still considering the classic 36mm vs 40mm DDs. Do the 36mm version (118239) have the ceramic sleeves in the bracelet? Any views, thoughts, opinions are greatly appreciated. Pics to enable me are appreciated also

It is only the 40 and the previous 41 that has the ceramic sleeves. I purchased a 36 mm day date a year and a half ago. My advice would be first decide on size. For me it was 36 mm all the way, despite my 7.25 in wrist.

The next step in my thought process is what we’re the minimal features I wanted out of the watch as pre owned was on my radar. I determined I required a double quick set and sapphire glass at a minimum. Therefore it was between a 18238 vs the current 118238.
I figured it would be 118238 as it had an upgraded clasp and solid links (more gold and heavier). At the time my dealer had a mint 18238 with a fresh Rolex service as well as a good condition 118238. Holding both watches in hand I could barely discern any weight difference. Both felt great on the wrist. The bottom line was I fell in love with the 18238, the tapestry dial, raised crystal, and the brushed lug tops vs the polished on the 118238 just seemed to suit the watch better. And given the bracelet was in better condition and the watch was 5k less made this a no brainer.

I think with a day date, first get what YOU really want, 40, 41, 36 whatever. Don’t discount the older models and if you buy used, my advice is buy the best condition you can find. My 18238 bracelet is mint and will last 40 plus years with proper care. Would ceramic sleeves be good. Yes. Essential, not for me. A few pics of myv18238.

I decided to augment my predominantly sport Rolex collection with a DD 40. I usually use a Patek as a more formal watch, but sometimes I’m looking for a durable watch that I can dress up, or wear at the park with the kids. This watch fit the bill perfectly.

The lack of ceramic on the bracelet of a 36mm DD is not an issue for me. My 18239 has the older president bracelet with the exposed instead of the hidden clasp, which I prefer for adjustability

That is a gorgeous DD. Thanks for the pic and your thoughts. Yea, I am unsure about the 36mm vs 40mm. Pre owned 36mm is a lot of bang for the buck.

Which one did you have? Did you consider getting a 1.5 link? Knowing my luck, I would probably need one.

My thoughts exactly, I mainly wear my Pateks for work but love the versatility of the DD. How is the legibility on that blu dial?

Just ok. I thought it would be nice to have one watch with no lume. I tend to use other watches when traveling, there is nothing like a GMT, SkyD, or PP 5164 on an overnight flight.

I looked at the 36, but ultimately fell for the DD40 and all the upgrades that come with it. I do love the 36 as well. It’s a win either way.

I find the DD40 is great for work and for play.

Really nice! Do you prefer the 36mm over the 40?

Definitely 36mm for me. I prefer this size and I have 6.75” wrist size. No problem with 36mm.

What are ceramic sleeves?

I hVe a 118238. Sizing is a bit of a pain, I probably need a 1.5 link because if I add one its too lose, and without it its tight

The DDII had 1.25 links. I agree, sizing can be somewhat problematic.

Arguably the most beautiful watch ever made. Actually, it’s not up for argument.

Entirely different!

I own and enjoy both a DD36 (in rose gold) and a DD40 (in white gold).

I can tell you that they are both spectacular but so entirely different in so many ways, not to mention the vastly different price points.

My suggestion would be that you try variants of each of the DDs, as many as you possibly can. I believe your impressions about their look, feel, presence and technical aspect will likely trump the smaller issue of the ceramic sleeves.

Best of luck on your search!

Stunning Linen Dial. I to like the 36. The fact its the only model in Bark helps as well.

yes. size does matter hahaha. i have a small wrist so 36mm is just right. 40 day date is too bigger...i like the sport models for larger like the YatchMaster or Daytona for 40mm
