VERSUS: 5-Digit Sub and GMT

Ninth edition of the "VERSUS" post/picture. What is "VERSUS"? Well, I thought it would be fun to compare two watches (and only those two watches) and discuss pros/cons by outlining the differences and getting folks' ideas/thoughts/opinions on TRF. We got folks here that have been collecting and studying these things for decades all the way to those who are just starting to venture into the crazy world of Rolex (and everyone in between). Therefore, it would be fun and educational!

For this edition, we have a showdown of a couple similar yet different 5-digit sport models. The Submariner 16610 and the GMT 16710.

Which do you prefer and why?

Previous VERSUS:
1. VERSUS: Submariner 1680 v. 16610
2. VERSUS: Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller 16610LV and 126600
3. VERSUS: Rolex Submariner 16610s
4. VERSUS: Sea (Deepsea 116660) to Sky (Explorer 1016)
5. VERSUS: Submariners Vintage and Modern
6. VERSUS: Datejusts with Unique Dials
7. VERSUS: Vintage Submariners
8. VERSUS: Vintage GMTs

Slightly prefer the looks of the 16610, but slightly prefer the caseback, clasp and GMT function of the GMT...so Explorer II it is!

GMT gets my vote in this matchup.
It does everything that Sub does and more, practically speaking of course.

The matchup that's impossible for me is that same GMT vs a Sub without the date. That's a battle of function vs aesthetic and I couldn't possibly pick a winner - so I bought both!

Ok, fine. Even though I've only owned the 16610, I'd pick the GMT this time around.

Show a Sub vs. a Pepsi.
In that case, Pepsi all day long.

The splash of red and the extra complication make the GMT the clear winner for me.

In this format I think I prefer the Sub. If it were a Pepsi GMT with jubilee then it would be a different story.

Sub for me mainly for its water capabilities. Both great pieces.

LOL, exactly. Not unless your Rolex comes with a tank of Nitrox or Trimix. For my shower, swimming pool, or ocean, I'd be fine with any Rolex, probably even a Cellini.

Gmt

it's just as usuable in water as a sub with an extra complication and jubilee option.

I went Sub first time around. If I had to do it again it'd be the GMT.

The GMT, because of the possible bezel and bracelet options

I was choosing between these exact two watches earlier this year...

At first I wanted the GMT for its symmetry, the extra function, the red fourth hand... but then something changed and I wanted the Sub for it's non-symmetry and simpler dial.

I bought the Sub.

4 weeks later I'd fallen out of love with it. It was so boring and dull, with the flimsy oyster bracelet prone to scratching, not enough bling compared to my old DJ36...

But the DJ was too small... so I part exchanged the DJ and the Sub against a new, bigger, DJ41. Happy again now ...

Agree with Tony here - the GMT gets my vote for the functionality in this matchup. But a Sub no date would take it for my appreciation of it's beauty.

If I had a single use for the GMT I'd consider it, but for my needs my 16610 has served me well for 7 such years now

Going with the GMT (check my dig), but it's closer than you'd think. My collection will always be centred by a 5 digit sports model, and my hierarchy goes GMT>Seadweller>Sub date, but it is extremely close. I just love the colour the GMT brings to the table, and the clasp of the GMT is a bit more comfortable than the Sub. But man, there are times when I look at 5 digit subs and think that could easily be my only one.

I've always been into Subs, but lately found myself lusting over a 16710 and spending so much time looking at internet images of it.

Funny how when I first got into Rolex the Sub and GMT looked the same to me, but now they look so different.

Both are excellent thought maybe the GMT just edges it on account of bezel insert options!

GMT.

For me having two time zones is a must. My ham radio transmission logs are kept in GMT; flight plans, aviation weather, NOTAMS, and TFRs are all in GMT. I'm constantly checking GMT, but the 16710 bezel can also be used for timing recreational dives and parking meters.

I had both. I eventually let go of the sub... not because I didn't like it, but I prefer the GMT.
It is, as many have mentioned, literally 6 watches in one. I also prefer the clasp's smaller footprint. The GMT function, for me, is much more useful then the sub.
It is also my daily... I love this watch.

Cool use case for the watch! Private or commercial pilot or ATC?

GMT 16710 gets my vote too! 2 or even 3 time zones and the swap of bezels gives you a new watch every time. So it's a clear winner.
