Who want's to play "guess how this Rolex was destroyed"

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ROLEX-WATCH...72.m2749.l2648

never seen anything like this before, did it catch on fire? water ingress? seems awfully strange for the dial, hands and date wheel to be destroyed in the fashion they were and not the case. the movement doesn't appear super rusty either. What're your guesses?

I'm guessing heat, smoke, and water damage from a house fire.

The bigger question is why anyone would pay $1,000 for a piece that damaged.

This. Not sure why anyone would pay that.

That's an easy one.
It's been in a (house) fire.

Are the salvageable parts worth a $1000?

I ended up paying $540 for it, decided not to tackle the project and sold it to a jeweler in NY for $725. The movement wasn't that bad tbh, with a service and cleaning it should've been fine likely would've worked as it was if the hands were off. the balance swung freely, autowind was a little noisy. With sourcing a Used bezel, crystal, crown/stem, dial hands and used bracelet I was looking at around $800 plus $360 for a service and whatever parts needed to be replaced in the movement. ~$1,700-2,000 once all said and done. for a $2600-4000 watch

That blew my mind that the crown melted yet the hairspring wasn’t destroyed from the heat. The Teflon coated gears appeared to clean up just fine with a little naphtha on a cotton swab. If it were a men’s watch I would’ve ended up making a video on the restoration.
