Any Wooden Boat Enthusiasts Here?

Back in the 1990s, I bought a 14 foot closed-bow mahogany and cedar boat built in 1949. It was in rough shape, so I stripped varnish, sanded and re-varnished it until it was functional again. By no means was it an actual restoration, just a repair job.

I sold the boat on ebay back in 2002 when purging my storage unit full of of motorcycles, cars and boats, and I've regretted it every year since.

Most summers for the past 20 years, I've searched the internet unsuccessfully for the boat to see if it was still floating. I did my usual search today, and I found it! It's owned by a guy on the east coast who did a more thorough repair, but he's never had it on the water. He has several wooden boats in his garage, and he sent me this photo of mine.

I'm thrilled, and long story short, I've been negotiating with him today to buy it back. Are any of you wooden boat enthusiasts or owners? If so, I would love to see photos and hear stories.

My ex father in law built his 45 foot wooden cabin cruiser. He is a master craftsman and the boat was a floating piece of fine furniture.

For every one day he spent motoring around Vancouver Island, he spent three days working and maintaining the boat. He actually enjoyed going down to his dock with a few beers, putting a baseball game on the radio and spending hours just putzing on the thing.

Love wooden boats such as the one you had and hopefully get back. They are works of functional carpentry art. Many of those “Italian Jobs” are stunning with according prices. That said, I wouldn’t own one, way much maintenance, have to be too careful to prevent damage and most importantly for me not suitable for fishing or diving.

Beautiful boat. Was it originally an inboard?

Every time I put it in the water at the access, people came up to me and talked about wood boats. People would wave me down from their docks. It was great fun to just tool around the lake. There are boat shows around Minnesota featuring wooden boats costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, but I always enjoyed my little utility boat. Wood just feels completely different on the water than metal or fiberglass.

No. It’s only 14 feet long. I had an old 25 hp Mercury motor on it, but it could take a 40 hp. When my kids were young, they could water ski behind it with the 25.

I saw the rear compartment and thought maybe someone tried to cram an inboard in there. It really is a good looking boat.

Beautiful boat. I love wooden boats but just do not have the time, patience, nor budget to care for them. You don't see many low wooden cruiser in the ocean around here unless it's a sailboat.

Boats are my profession, I know enough of them to stay clear as far as possible in my free time.

Yours is beautiful though

Yes, they are beautiful. when I was younger (still in high school), my dad bought a Penn Yan wooden boat that My dad, my brothers, and I sanded and revarnished one summer. It was a fun project and the boat was beautiful when we were done.

I get it, however I love the water and my boats are more hobby/fun than an actual job. They do cost dumb money though.

I live in the woods part time and have a boat in the ocean. I get a great amount of joy out of both. Boats aren’t as bad to maintain as everyone Makes them out to be.

If you like wooden boats, you should check out Leo @ Samson Boat Co. He's restoring Tally Ho, a 48' gaff-rig cutter,

Good videos and amazing craftmanship.

I have been watching these guys for the last year or so, "Acorn to Arabella". They are building a wooden sailboat - all the the wood they are getting is from their property (they cut an milled it themselves). The guy who owns / heads it up has never built a boat before (although he has enlisted / had experts volunteer their help at times). Neat channel. They plan on having it launched next year.. and then their channel will switch gears to all the adventures they will have on it sailing around and seeing the world.

https://www.youtube.com/c/AcornToArabella

I don't know much else about wooden boats (other than they are quite beautiful!)
