Patek Chronograph Owners. Pls come in.

Thinking of getting a Natilus Chronograph 5980 but would prefer that the second hand moves continuously. Not sure if that will damage the watch mechanism. Any idea?

Just a quick check for the usage of the chronograph function with the following poll:

As far as I've read, there is no issue running the chrono hand continuously on the 5980. 5980 makes for a great looking watch and the hottest nautilus in my book.

On the old Daytonas with Zenith movement it was not recommend it but the new ones are supposed to be ok if you run it, same I heard for the PP, and for the use well I've had a few, even if no PP and you almost never use it, I probably only used them to time boiling eggs, pasta and things like that...

Great! Thanks everyone for sharing.

Just a few more questions.
Understand the buttons are rather stiff.
When the chronograph is running, can the 4pm button be depressed?
Similarly, after the chronograph is reset to zero, can the same button be depressed too?
Does it do anything to the chronograph?

On a fly back Chrono, the 4 o'clock button restarts the second hand back to 12 and it then starts counting again.

I almost never use the chrono function on my watches, but really like them aesthetically

5980 is indeed a lovely watch.
Think I'm going for it.

I engage the counter hand all the time on my 5980's. I do not use the chronomat function at all. To make it perfect, I start the timer at 12 noon! There is no damage doing this or loss of time accuracy.

I use the chronograph function on my watches all the time, just not to time events. I just like seeing stuff move on my watch and especially on my command. Great entertainment value. Oh and chronographs look awesome too.

is the reverse true, will not running the second hand reduce wear on the watch? for example, should you stop the watch when you take it off?

I owned the 5980 for a bit, I always ran the seconds hand and never had any issues. My only gripe aesthetically is the monocounter reminds me of a CD disc taking away from the cohesiveness of the dial. The white dial, two tone and RG certainly alleviate this.

Ugh, I hate the thought of running a chrono all the time to have running seconds. It's not that I'm afraid of ruining the movement. Clearly with a vertical clutch, that's not going to happen (if anything, it will preserve the movement as the chrono seconds isn't held in place by friction).

BUT, then the subdials all start to advance, and it will almost never look symmetrical and nice most of the time. It would annoy me to no end.

That's why I do not like watches that have no running seconds. It's an OCD thing with me.

The cd-disc makes the watch a bit retro.

The 5172G is the classic PP Chrono way to go IMO! (In blue).
