How I use watches to rationalize anything...

I was (and still am) toying with the idea of getting a SkyDweller which has an MSRP of around $15K and a street price (blue face) in the upper 20s, last I looked.

That's a lot of money. Either way, it's a lot.

And so I was also toying with the idea of buying a second (third, er... fifth car) as an occasional track toy, which is just silly frivolous, but then I thought, hey, what's a $50K car compared to a $30K watch? I can actually drive the car...

Anyway, I was wondering, do any of you guys and gals use similar crazy logic to justify crazy expensive stuff?

Absolutely. Yes. Indeed. For sure.

And please buy the track car. Soooooooo much more fun than the watch.

I use it to rationalize everything.

Best is virtuous cycle.

Watch to justify car to justify another watch to justify an even nicer car...just need enough M2 to keep it going!

Had a friend that pointed out something clever yesterday, if your children can collect candy fast enough from the neighbors, technically you don't need to buy any candy and can simply keep recirculating supply around the neighborhood!

Sort of. The part of trying to find balance in my luxury items has been a journey that keeps evolving. I am sure that I can justify whatever I choose to do. The car thing is cool and I have been down that rabbit hole several times. I have also been round and round with watches. Typically my watch purchases are a static expense that either goes up a little or down a little in value. I do pay insurance on them but that is typically the only recurring cost. A car is typically a depreciating asset, except for certain model in a recent time window. I am not talking about super cars or true exotics but regular cars. Tax, tags, insurance, fuel, service, parts and the person that crashes into you out of the blue. If you have the car box checked then I would not add I would keep what I have or get rid of what you have for something else. The watch, for me, is much easier. I would go get the watch and drive what you have. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Funny….I was going to get a PM watch of my dreams (platinum Day Date with an ice blue dial) but then I realized that for the same amount of money, I could buy a classic car that I’ve wanted (lusted after and dreamed of) since I was a kid. So, I just bought and took delivery of my special car a few weeks ago.

Driving it is a blast! I’m so glad I did that. The marginal amount of pleasure I derive from the car is far greater than what I would’ve derived going from a SS Rolex to a platinum Rolex.

Unless one has a limited amount of money, there’s an opportunity cost for everything, e.g. yet another Rolex (I have 4 plus a vintage Tudor Sub) or a fully-stocked home gym, jacuzzi, family membership at a local spa/hotel/gym etc. let alone stuff like college tuition and braces for the kids. At this point in my life I want to maximize enjoyment, especially things I can do with my family.

No to the OPs question.

But I'm happy for you that you have that kind of money to throw around on toys.

is it really any sillier than spending money on getting hair plugs?

Am sure you realize buying the track car is just the 'starting price'. Tire budget, fluids, brake pads... perhaps the occasional transmission spaghetti.

Timepieces are set and forget for about a decade.

BTW: Buy a 'real' track car, as you know anything still street-legal is a compromise.

Save currency, get the SkyD :)

LOL, Steven.

BTDT, know that a real track car also includes a truck and a trailer.

Wait, you don't have a truck? Well, shouldn't that be next?
