RSC Recommendation

Good morning and Happy Father’s Day Weekend to all the fellow dads. I’ve got three grown sons and an 8 1/2 year old daughter who is on the struggle bus today. Poor girl had her tonsils and adenoids out on Wednesday. Thankfully we’re 4 days into recovering now instead of the day off. Hurts my heart to not be able to fix the hurt. I just needed to get that off my chest, now onto my question for everyone.

I’m wondering which RSC you guys would currently recommend for my Datejust? It’s a 16014 from 84-85. I have an independent that I like and trust with any watch I have but I’ve decided I would prefer to send this watch which is my favorite and will be passed down to my sweet daughter I mentioned. For some reason sending it back to the “Mother Ship” just seems like the best thing. It’s still running really well but I’ve noticed that it’s getting stiffer and stiffer the last 6 months when I wind it. Thanks for your help, I was just wondering which RSC is doing the best work right now.

I'd stick with the Independent.

DO NOT send a vintage watch to an RSC ! They will bring the watch to as new specifications with replacement parts and destroy the history of the watch. Have the watch restored by an independent restoration specialist.

Agreed.
Especially if they are able to use genuine parts

History aside, the OP's daughter is only 8 1/2.
It's the OP's history and any course of action he may take is all that matters.
If the OP wishes to have the full spa treatment performed at an RSC then that's a relevant part of the history of the watch for when he hands it over.
Another way of looking at it is it's probably a good time to have the full spa treatment done at an RSC(which is what I suspect is the OP's intention) given the age of the watch, unless someone like LAWW are fully factored into the equation as another fine option

I sent my SS ca. 1988 DJ this past week
through my AD/Rolex Boutique…
want overhaul polish, and new bracelet jubilee . The AD said 8 weeks. They come back usually on time as promised. I think about $1,800+ for steel
bracelet!

It was my first Rolex I got myself (had gotten one from
my grand dad when turned 15 and was stolen at Prepschool as my dad had predicted!) so my first job after grad school. I got that watch about a year or so into first job.

RSC Recommendation

Thanks for everyone’s input, I decided to send it to my independent Zimmerman Watch Repair in York PA.
Drew does amazing work and I have zero worries about him and his work. I definitely want the full spa treatment, not that it needs much as it’s been quite babied. I wear it everyday but I’m not digging ditches and when I am doing something physically demanding it’s certainly not on the wrist. It still keeps phenomenal time and has very few scuffs on the case and bracelet but I’d like a freshen up all around. My main reason for servicing is the amount of resistance when I wind it. It’s getting progressively more resistance against turning. As I said earlier if it was my Submariner and had the ability to appreciate in value the way they can, I might choose not to polish but it’s just a Datejust, albeit a nice one but I’m sure that once Drew gets it he’ll do just what it needs and nothing he shouldn’t.
Thanks again for your all’s input.

This watch looks fine. It just need a service. RSC will use the correct parts for the movement as will an independent who has a Rolex parts account. Now if the dial were deteriorated and you wanted it that way, Rolex might repair or replace it, then it might make sense to go with an independent.

Thank goodness. Reading your post I was terrified to scroll down and find that you'd sent it to the butchers at RSC, like that guy who received his dad's 5 digit GMT that was worn once before being put in a safe for 30+ years (so it was practically deadstock) then sent it off to them.
