A crystal availability question (Tudor Big Block)
Hi all
I’m just thinking ahead regarding an incoming that isn’t even here yet. Should my incoming 79170 need a replacement crystal (25-130 I think), are those readily available to independents with a Rolex parts account, or are they discontinued and only available from NOS sources? I understand acrylic Subs are tricky in that regard, and a lot of NOS “Rolex” crystals are really after market. Just think long term for what will inevitably be with me for life. Thanks for any wisdom offered Kindest regards Dave Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hey
I used to have a Big Block. Great watch.
1) You could try to source an OEM crystal online (eBay, TRF, etc). You will occasionally see them for sale as this is not a rare watch/reference. 2) Sometimes independent watchmakers can access watchmaker specific forums, threads, WhatsApp chats where they buy/sell/trade parts amongst other watchmakers. 3) It would be ideal if you could find an independent watchmaker with a parts account, but I am learning that this is becoming more and more rare. I know some great independent watchmakers, but I don’t know anyone specifically (can anyone help?) who can order and buy OEM Rolex/Tudor parts directly from Rolex/Tudor. Most of the time when an independent watchmaker says they can “source” OEM Rolex parts, it’s usually a combination of 1) or 2) or their own personal stockpile of parts they have acquired over the years. |

Thanks so much
In the UK there are some repairers that are well regarded with vintage Rolex / Tudor, and as they are Rolex accredited have access to Rolex parts. If the part in question is readily available then no problem. My question was if they are no longer available from Rolex directly, maybe I should acquire one that is NOS and squirrel it away until the day it is needed. D |

The original BB 94200/94300/79160/79170/79180 early plexi are soft edged…so, if you run your thumb over the edge there is no harsh edging.
Later service ones can be a bit more hard edged. If you can keep the original (polish it with cleaner), I’d recommend it as they just feel more in keeping with the rest of the watch in my humble opinion *, and I also personally like the way they slightly discolour/patinate a bit yellow-ey. * same way I much prefer a vintage car with original glass (incl windscreen/windshield even if it has a few scratches/tiny stone chips/discolouration) matching the codes and brand etchings of the other 5 windows.
