16700 R serial from 1988

Dear forum members,

I would like to get your opinion on my 16700 from 1988.

I am not an expert but I think that this watch was one of the early examples that were produced from this reference; it is from 1988 and it has an R serial. Please note that the dial has subtle changes compared to later models with the same reference. The crown on the dial appears to be slightly taller and the font on the GMT MASTER and SWISS-T<25 looks different aswell. The date disc has open 6s and open 9s (6,9,16,19,26,29). As far as I am concerned it has original tritium hands.

I purchased this watch back in september 2023 from a dealer in Spain and this dealer purchased it from the original owner.

¿does anyone have more information regarding this iteration from the 16700? It seems difficult to find it online :)

Thank you so much!

Hi. Very nice. I have one too.
Mine is also R serial and has open 6 & 9. I believe only the first couple of years of the 16700 had the open 6 & 9.
Mine has had at least 2 Rolex services before I aquired it, so cannot speak for the originality.

No guides like the superb 1675 stuff, and (although much maligned) Orchi’s pretty good 16750 and 16760 guides , but some stuff from jP Swish at el here 5 yrs ago :

Nice GMT OP!
The only thing I can tell is that the bezel insert is servcie / modern. From this era it should be serif or fat font

Completely true! Here attached with the original bezel insert that the watch came with :) I purchased an original "Pepsi" insert afterwards that came with the thin font.

My doubt was regarding the font and the crown on the dial, as well as the open sixes and nines. I could not find another example like this one on online pictures
