Joking aside - better photos would help a bit. |

Tried taking better photos but struggling, the inside of the back of the case has several numbers an symbols stamped into it or engraved, the engraving is very faint and I can make out what looks like RO/31151/9 and LON49635-11-89 also B1/10/79, the stamped number is 475, I think the other stamped number and symbols are a gold mark a 'T' a '9' and what looks like a lion or similar head also .375. There is also an embossed D.S&S. My Dad said the watch was 18ct? The movement has a the number 54120

It's a mid-late 1950's rolex precision manual wind in 9ct gold, valued around $1000

I would agree with this assessment, ASSUMING it's a gentleman's model. Somehow, I have a feeling that it's a small ladies watch. If so, I would value it at about $300.
What's the diameter of the watch? |

Sorry yes 33mm, from what I have worked out the case has a London gold mark, dose that mean that the case is not Rolex? Just the movement and face? What is the significance of the 475? Could this movement and face be built into a SS Oyster case?

The significance of .375 is the purity of gold. Your watch is 37.5% gold. I'm sure the movement could be swapped into an oyster case although I'm not sure if yours has a 1210 movement or not. If it was your grandfathers watch I would keep it as is.

I Don't think there is any significance to the 475 I assumed you meant .375. Your model number is a 4 digit number, anything hand engraved is done by watchmakers during service. The movement number should be a 4 digit number stamped on the movement itself. The movement number you posted isn't really relevant to any dating information, and clear pictures of the caseback are needed to help further assist you. There were multiple case makers in different countries to keep import costs down , and the stampings were different for each brand

Late 1950's 9ct gold Rolex jewel lever manual wind centre seconds watch in a three piece snap-back case with a repainted dial fitted to a leather strap, saleable value GBP 400-600.
