Sad and Happy at the same time...

My dad passed away a few weeks ago.
My mom just gave me his Rolex DateJust.
My dad wore it everyday from the 70s.
This watch started it all for me.
I admired my dad’s watch since I was a young child.
When I wear it now, it makes me tear up.

I don’t know what model this is.
The bracelet has 6251H on it and end links has 555.

I want to get it serviced and wear it with pride, just like my dad did for the last 50+ years.

I just want a service, keep the dial, hands etc. and no polish.
I’ll drop it off at my AD later and hope RSC doesn’t mess it up.

Sorry for your loss. My dad started it all for me by buying me my first watch, a Bulova "Submariner". He passed a few years ago. Still have it, makes me think of him every time I wear it and I post photos on TRF when I wear it for the day... Good luck to you!!

I would go the reputable, Rolex-trained, independent service route and try retain as much of your dad's watch as possible. Who knows what the RSC will do with your heirlooom.

My condolences to you, but nice to have such a lifelong memento to remember him by.

One note of caution on the service: make sure you get the work description in detail and in writing so they don't wipe away all your dad's patina. I made that exact mistake a few years ago when I brought my grandfather's 1960's Gubelin to the actual Gubelin store in Lucerne Switzerland where he bought it, I was a noob, knew nothing, just asked them to give it a nice service. In the end they cleaned the movement and replaced the beautiful vintage dial and crystal, so while the watch looks brand new it carries almost zero nostalgia of my grandfather, I regret it to this day. Actually more this day than back then when I didn't know any better!!!

My heartfelt condolences.

Some good advice on how to proceed with your heirloom watch in above posts.

Cheers

In all seriousness, I wouldn’t dare let RSC touch such a family heirloom. They’re just not set up for respecting the originality of vintage pieces, IMHO.

I'm sorry for your loss. But, this is one of the things that I love about watches - they are (or can be) family heirlooms and can pass from generation to generation. In so doing, you'll always have a part of your father with you. Beautiful watch.

My condolences for your loss. It’s wonderful that you have such a fantastic piece from him. Every time you look at it you will think of him. That’s priceless.

My father still wears his DJ everyday (bought in 1964) and he is the reason I bought my first. He is proud that one day it will be in my collection. And it will be the most important watch I own no matter what else I ever buy.

One day in the very distant future when I pass, I hope my son will cherish my watch in the same way as you.

Very sorry for your loss. Its a wonderful watch to remember your father by.

As others have said, make sure you are very very clear with RSC as to what you want. Or better still take it to a trusted independent.

Sorry to hear of the passing of your father, can’t imagine how gut wrenching that must be. On the other hand, it’s so awesome to see your passion for wearing the watch you saw on his wrist for many years...while the circumstances around it are unfortunate, I really appreciate you sharing the story with us as I think many of us hope to have our pieces be appreciated by sons/daughters much like you have shown.

I was in the same situation as you 15 years ago. Exact back ground of events but instead of a DJ my story is a DD. Were very lucky to have watches that our father's wore and now we get to enjoy and to remember the past. Little funny ,when I asked my dad for the time he would look at his DD and rub his thumb across the dial first. I do the same subconsciously . I realized this just a few years ago!
