ROOF MOUNT Cycling RACKS anyone..?

Seems to be lots of cyclists here in the watch forums and curious how others carry there bikes on a car roof..? I myself am vested heavy from a company out of Florida by the name of SEASUCKER. To me this is the only way to transport a bike up and out of the way from hanging off the rear of a hitch carrier..

Spent decades with roof racks, and Sea Suckers are some of the coolest. However, once I started traveling to races in my Sprinter van, I moved to hitch racks. Way more convenient. Now I'll never go back to the roof, even with a car.

This for sure. I have a two bike and a four bike depending on if the kids are coming with or not. Hitch mounted racks in my opinion are the best.

I switched to hitch mounted as well, easier and better aerodynamics/wind noise. However, I previously had a Yakima system.

We both drive hatchbacks & prefer to get back seats down / bikes in back. We’d only do that summer only with a dust sheet to protect carpet & one in between bikes.

Bike was in getting serviced few weeks ago & 2 min job to remove front wheel & load bike into back of car when collecting

Both systems have pros and cons. I think it depends on your needs. My thoughts on running gear on top of my vehicles for the last 30 years, living at the beach and 8000’:

PROs: We use roof mounts for versatility. Ski, bikes, surf boards — no problem. A well made roof system will not shake or damage your gear. A good roof system can get pricey, but I don’t want my $12,000 bikes falling off my roof or getting rear ended by someone texting.

CONs: say good-bye to your gear if want to get into a garage or drive thru. Also say good-bye to aerodynamics...in an SUV the COG just became much much worse.

Hitch mounts are too one dimensional for our needs.

PROs: They are convenient and have improved over the years. They keep your COG low and offer better aerodynamics. Parking garages and drive-thrus are accessible.

CONs: They can drag on inclines, when going into parking lots and steep driveways — basically they increase the overhang behind the rear axel and decrease the departure angle. They twist and shake off-road — when you take your 4wheel drive SUV off-road.

Sounds silly, but roof mounted systems also pick up less grime on your gear. Also, all of our racks/mounts are LOCKABLE. And the “up-high” location makes it harder for snatch/grab theft. You can’t access our gear unless you swing out the rear tire carrier and climb up in the tailgate. With that said, it’s very easy to load/unload gear for my wife or myself.

As we’ve become older it’s a bit harder to lift stuff onto the roof of the SUV. We’ve done a hitch carrier for years now.

Yes if one is to lift a full suspension mob to the roof of a lincoln navigator or similar, you will need 2 people to do so. I have only ever used mine for road bikes and no issue for me picking those light weight things to the roof...

I’m a roof rack guy but I usually go with the OEM crossbars if available then use Rockymounts front wheel off trays. I only have cars not SUV’s so not too tall to reach up.
Almost all OEM bars for Euro cars are made by Votec and they’re usually well integrated into the car’s design. My current ride is a 2019 Golf R, have also had Votec’s on several MINIs, Audi TT-RS, and 991 911.
The funniest story was when I ordered bars for my then new 991. They arrived at the dealer with no instructions and we couldn’t figure out how they fit. Service was going to call their tech support when low and behold there was four pages in the owner’s manual explaining it. You pulled up the rubber trim tabs surrounding the sunroof which revealed pop-up tabs that the bars attached to.

It’s interesting that so many luxury cars have those attachment points. I couldn’t imagine putting a roof rack on an S600 or anything like that.

I’ve got one of these in my garage. One of the few in existence. It was a prototype a company was working on. Yakima saw it, bought the patent, then shelved the project. If you can’t beat ‘em, buy ‘em. Interesting tidbit; Sea Sucker has named one of their racks with this rack's original moniker....Talon

I think most S600 owners will just let their chauffeur deal with that. Or take their G wagon/ GLS instead.

I don't see why they wouldn't, I loved my factory BMW roof rack. it's a great way to upsell customers on stuff they don't need or don't know they need. makes the car much more versatile, and ultimately helped me realize that I didn't need to be driving around in an SUV to support my lifestyle.

I saw a Bentley with a roof rack at the trailhead a few weeks ago, everyone there was talking about how awesome it was lol theres something satisfying about using the wrong tool to get the job done sometimes.

I understand, it's just not me. You alluded to it, I am a "right tool for the job" kinda guy. If it's the only tool I own, then I make do and it's acceptable. However, I will never see a Bentley as my only car.
