Time to get the Purists "Riled-up" LOL. 5513 On its way back from Relume
I know that I differ from many of the purists on this forum, but often I like a vintage watch that is still functional, but retains that "vintage look". I like the modern Rolex watches with the glossy dials and the gold surrounds. I especially like the functional lume. However, I prefer the matte dials and the non-gold surround markers. I do wish that the old tritium would still glow.
I made an impulse buy of this watch off Ebay. I really didn't research it much, and bought it spur of the moment. Upon inspection after owning it for a while, I realized it had replacement luminova hands, and at some point the dial had been relumed. The relume job was pretty terrible really, and if you notice.......there is a small pin-hole in the lume at the base of the hour hand. It wasn't terribly noticeable, but it bugged me a bit. IMHO, I could do one of 3 things: -- Sell the watch - not really a good option since I did really like the watch, and it was a great vintage for wearing daily -- Send it off to RSC for a new dial, hands, and service with a service insert. - Not really a good option. It had been fully serviced less than a year ago, and was running superbly at less than 1 sec/day deviation -- Send it off to a Lume specialist and see if he could relume it for me. - Decent option. Fairly inexpensive. No additional detriment to value since it was already a relume. Guess what I did??? I sent it off to Kent Parks for a Relume. He said that he could clean the dial, relume the dial and hands with a vintage shade patina all for ~$150. Do you think that I made a good decision???

Sounds good but it appears that you have already made up your mind and sent it off. Why the need for a poll?

Also, I am a bit partial to this one because it is a birth-year watch. With a relume I can dive with it and not worry too much about the dial and hands.
Anyone want to see some teaser pictures???

It is sad to see the dial has been worked over, you really cannot do any more harm in getting it re-lumed. Vintage dials are hard to find untouched, and when you do find the perfect dial it is costly.

I think you made the right decision. It won't hurt to relume since it has already been done once and Kent Parks has done some nice watches. I wish he still made custom dials.
Post some photos when it comes back.

The insert is original, but the "pearl" is not. It is luminova. He has a system by which he applies luminova into the pearl dot area. I am a bit apprehensive about this actually, but it wasn't expensive, so I thought....."what the heck" I'll give it a try

Wow, that's impressive!
I've only seen one other vintage Sub with lume that is anywhere close to that. |

Yes, sorry........I really didn't think this thread/poll through very well when setting it up. I shouldn't have set-up a poll asking what I should do when I had already done it. I was just excited to be getting the watch back.

Although I'm not a fan of a glowing vintage dial, the relume looks great. Impressive given that most relume jobs look like they were performed by a 3-year-old.
