Step fathers 5513
Hi
I was left my step fathers 5513 rolex. Its in a bad way! I was going to sell it online but I cancelled it as someone said it was worth a lot more than I had initially sold it for so I cancelled the sale. Now its where it belongs. The problem is the dial is really bad. The hands are in a bag but the hour hand is damaged. There are other missing parts like the bracelet and the number ring from around the dial. Can anyone recomend what I should do? |

In this coronavirus world, I’d recommend you wash your hands first. Then focus on taking better pics.

All that aside if the watch has sentimental value and a good story behind it you could always think about restoration. That being said, based on where it is now it would be a COSTLY endeavor to get it back to its original state. Sourcing alot of the original / period correct parts will be a labor of love and we haven't even seen the mechanical parts yet. If there is rust / corrosion in there it might be past its recovery point. I do like the engraving on the back though...

Okay. And giving a new member grief for having dirty, hardworking hands isn't a personal attack. That criticism had nothing to do with helping the OP with answers to his problem. Double standard much?

The comment about hands was just that, a comment about hands. No matter how insensitive it might have been, it's not a personal attack that included name-calling, like your comment. Big difference.

If you do have any old links for this that would be awesome. Even if they are damaged or bent, this bag of parts is being sent to be restored, so anything will help! |

Also I never got why RM58 was written on the certificate. Should that be the serial?

What does the serial start with? Looks like 12xxxxx.
A lot of damage to the wAtch and needs work. If the serial number is right, it’s also got serviced parts in it. |

You don't need to become an expert, just take good photos, describe everything that is part of the sale, and put it up for auction on eBay. Someone may have the parts to restore it, or they may take it apart for its parts. As mentioned above, based on the serial number on the case, the damaged dial is probably not the original anyway.
Did the person who told you it was worth more than you sold it for make you an offer? We can probably tell you if it's fair.

Looks like this watch has more than a few stories to tell. What did your step father do for a living? The history of the watch (if you know it) can help with value. As others have mentioned, better pictures will help immensely. Even a little elbow grease with a very fine rubbing compound (even toothpaste) on a cloth will help us all see through the crystal to the dial and hands.

Hope you keep it. As others have said, better pics would be nice. After this covid ordeal has subsided, get it to someone like Bob Ridley.

5513
the 5513 is a great reference to have, theres a lot of experts and services available via the forum, as your Rolex hasn't cost you anything so any funds that you have to lay out to get it up and to a good wearable standard is nothing compared to the price you would have had to paid for the watch in the first place, the box and papers are also a plus,
my course of action would be to have it opened (by an expert) to see how the movement is looking, (post pictures) get it fully serviced, shop around and see if you can pick up a used dial and hands, the 5513 can be worn on a Nato strap and looks good. do keep us up dated with this project and all the best you have a decent starting point. all the very best "H"
