Opinion on this Rolex Model

Hi All,

I am new to this forum. I would like to get a Rolex for myself as well if possible. Thus, have been visiting ADs regularly to see if I can pick up one piece suited for myself.

I happened to come across this but not too sure about it, would love to hear opinions from the forum here :)

The two tone datejust was made infamous by Patrick Bateman of American Psycho. That's an association to be aware of if you buy and wear this watch. Some people might think that is a cool association, others might not want to be associated with that character!

I'd say until quite recently the two tone datejust was the quintessential two tone rolex, recently overtaken by the two tone "bluesy" submariner with blue dial and bezel. Some might say this is a 1980s watch, a Patrick Bateman watch, or a "grandpa" watch, but it doesn't have to be. It's an impressive watch no doubt.

The man clearly has no idea of what the classic rolex looks like. I think there was a thread where the bateman watch was a seiko.

As mentioned previously the older models, such as the 16013, are very similar in looks and are excellent value used compared to the cost of a new one.

If you're not sure about it, don't buy it. Don't buy a watch just because it happens to be available for purchase.

I'm not a two-tone fan so it's a pass for me. I do really like the DJ 36mm with jubille and fluted bezel with blue dial though.

Agree with both that DD 36 is a classic choice with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet.. the only concern for me is the yellow dial, if it was the palm or the other new 2021 dial, i would have take it straight haha

36mm is kinda small by today's standards so be careful.

I would definitely try it on to make sure it looks good on your wrist.

DJ36 is classic.
I have the version TT Everose gold version with MOP dial and diamond indices. I would have liked the full Everose gold version if I had the money.

I wholeheartedly agree.

OP, If you’re on the fence for this now, I don’t think it’s the right one for you.

Thanks for all the opinions, I actually find this piece attractive however my initial budget was for a SS piece which is much less compared to a 2 tone..

I agree with both comments above.

This DateJust can go with everything, dress up or down.

Try it on and see how you like it, don't buy because it is available.

DateJust 36 or 41, it depends on your wrist size. 36 is classic but some people with wrist size bigger than 6.5" might preferred 41.

DH36 is the perfect size. I don’t do two-tone. If you can’t tell if you want it or not don’t buy it.

I have all sizes of watches and the 36 was always a comfortable watch in a YG Rolex DD…

Many years ago I bought a 16013 two tone 36 Datejust with the champagne dial. It looks just like the model that you posted. It was highly sought after back then and has become a classic. The movement, crystal, bracelet, lume and dial have been improved. But, from a distance the newer and older models appear the same. There are a lot more Datejust varieties now.

Go to the Rolex website and look at all the varieties that are available.

Agree with others saying thats a classic combo. I'd say its a fine choice, given you like the 36 size.

Love two tone DJ! Size depends on your wrist. Size is completely up to you. The TT DJ is iconic Rolex. A true classic that is unaffected by temporary fads or social media watch "experts". This watch is a definate winner!

This is the classic Rolex. The backbone of the brand. Many recent Rolex fans are newcomers and don’t get it.

Great watch. You can find a preowned model that looks very similar that is within your budget.

The two tone DateJust is a fine watch, don’t be influenced by someone who’s obsessed with an irrelevant movie from 30 years ago. There are several great dial, numeral, bezel and bracelet combinations, try one one and decide.

I used to own a SS submariner however I tend to hit the watch against when I am working... I have once hit the lift door hard and there was a slight dent... That is why i am looking only at 36 now...

Earlier this year I bought a pre-owned SS Datejust 36 Turn-O-Graph with white gold bezel. 36mm is a great size and this watch is nice complement to my GMT. Sadly, Rolex stopped making the Turn-O-Graph in 2010.

That watch is a quintessential Rolex.

My dad wears it. My wife wears it in rose gold and diamond roman markers. Extremely versatile and universally loved. I’ve seen young guys wearing it as well as old men and women.

Really can’t go wrong.

I personally need the 41 as it looks puny on my wrists but it’s also a classic dimension so depends on the look you’re going for.

I have the tt dj36 and like a bit of bling on my wrist. It’s a very comfortable watch on the jubilee.

Probably the most common Rolex DateJust look ever. It’s so common it’s referred to as “the old man’s watch” because of its demographic appeal. So many inexpensive quartz models have copied its look the last 40 years. Because of its ambiguous look it’s probably the most invisible Rolex model you could wear on your wrist from the general public perspective.
