"Barn find": Unpolished Red Submariner
Hi guys,
As you may have figured out from the title, I am exited to share my latest acquisition This watch was handed down from the original owner to his son, but he didn't feel much for vintage watches and had it tucked away in a drawer the past few years. Recently he decided to sell the watch, to purchase 2 newer watches. One for himself and one for his wife. And thus the watch ended up with me... It's a 3.2 million serial 1680 with the Mark 5 dial. No box or papers. Apparently not everybody in this world is obsessed with them after purchase The watch was well worn by the original owner, and not pampered. He NEVER had any works done to the watch, not even serviced. What you see is all original as it left the factory, with the exception of the bracelet, that he changed for a 93150 in 1981. The insert has ceded very nice and I love the way it looks with the watch Strangely enough, the watch is still running strong, although I will have a movement service done to it by my watchmaker. Still contemplating if I should change the plexi to have a better view at that lovely matte dial. I am very thrilled to have an unpolished Red Sub that has lived well and if it could talk would have a lot of stories to tell Without further ado, a few pictures in its current condition. Enjoy!

I agree, I might want to change or polish the crystal just to have a clear view of that dial. Congrats on a great find!

Fantastic find, my friend! Nothing like seeing an unpolished case. Get a pearl in there and clean up the crystal and you will have a truly spectacular piece. Congrats again.

here's a couple of photos of mine when it was in like condition. So fun finding them untouched as is! I opted to get a service crystal put on to protect the dial (though i saved the original.. and still debate putting it back on!).
Congrats again on your mk5 and wear it in good health!

Thanks Wes!
Thanks Jack! She is a beauty indeed For once I am glad I can be on the telling side I am always so thrilled when I read the stories of others, and I hope everyone can find one sooner or later Thanks Ky! Hi John, as honest as they come! My 5513 from 1977 also has the 93150 with a VC Clasp. So I suppose it was introduced around that time I was also very thrilled to see it when I brought up the loupe Thanks Tom! I really appreciate it Quote:
Was thinking to leave this Plexi as is and replace (for the moment) the current just to have a clear view without changing the original character Still on the fence though Quote:
Thanks Tom! I will! At least I don't have to worry about any scratches I might put on it Quote:
Good that you save the original, it is part of the whole look Thanks a lot! Thanks Patrick! Patience my friend, I am sure it will! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Quote:
It was totally unexpected when I got the call, but oh so happy I did. Those darn barns should start revealing all of their secrets! Quote:
And those are two real beauties you have there! Congrats! Thanks Dries! Thanks to all you guys for sharing the joy and the sound advice as always! This is one of the few places where you will get positive feedback on a scratched up, beaten down watch and I love it Have a great day!

Great find. I would just have the crystal polished and maybe overhaul the movement and install new gaskets. Here is my twin Red Sub, a Mk5 and Mk6.

Congrats Zoran
re: the plexi, I'd leave it as is. Or polish it with some toothpaste (no joke) |
