How common are subs really

It’s funny how people say the sub (especially date) is one of the most common watches on people wrist. I’m from nyc and have a habit of looking at everyone’s wrist even before eye contact lol. If I’m lucky I might see one or two( aside from my own) out of the 1000s of people I see waking by daily. Yes i do see many rolexes in general, probably 10-15 daily but most of them are datejusts or even daydates. Not as many sports models as I used to see few years back. I’m thinking many people decided to make a few bucks and flip it on the grey market and buy themselves datejusts a long with pocketing some cash. Just a interested thought I had and wanted to share.

I think the most concentrated place I’ve seen Subs were on cruises. Lots more DJs, and DDs but more subs than I cared to count.

All inclusive resorts are Rolex conventions.

When else in life are you crammed next to 4000 people on a tiny boat for 5 days? I think what you’re noticing is the law of large numbers and not every fat clown from Ohio that’s going to drink 48 Coronas on the way to Jamaica own a sub.

Who, why are we dragging my state into this?

I am a professional in NW Ohio. In the last year I’ve seen two Subs (both Bluesy), two DJ, two Daytonas, and one Milhaud. I.e., a Rolex every couple of months.

I’ve seen less than 10 in years of traveling first class international. Almost all sightings have been in the airport lounge.

Lots of DJ and surprisingly SD’s. Have never seen a Daytona in the wild.

This! When I was at Heathrow the other week I saw a hulk, 2 x daytonas, and an AP just on the transfer bus to the plane

The holiday resort was jam packed with watches too (mainly subs)

I agree with Nick, most of the watch sightings I have seen are in the airport lounges or in first class itself. Most of the time I don't see any crowns out and about.

I rarely see subs out in the wild...most of the time it’s an older gentleman wearing a TT datejust

Airports, resorts, high-end shopping centers. Even saw quite a few on the DC Metro.

I was based in DC for awhile and rode the Metro everywhere. I also saw lots of Subs and Sub Dates but they were still rare as a percentage of all watches being worn. There may be millions and millions of them out there but for me they're still an infrequent sighting as opposed to say the Apple Watch for example. I see most Rolex on our guest's wrists as they are boarding or in the terminals. Away from vacation hot spots and airports and big cities, sightings for me are rare.

You could do a search on just about any topic or question and find a thread??, you are zero.zero help. Why did you even bother to post? Concerning the question, I rarely see subs in the wild.

Because 16 pages of the exact same subject was discussed 4 weeks ago and with it being so recent, most that participated in the last one will probably not repeat themselves here. If opinions on the subject is what the OP is looking for, he very well might find more immediate info on it by simply clicking the link. But keep chewing people's heads off for helping lol

I think it depends on location. I tend to see more in larger urban areas or vacation spots. Where I live I rarely see a Rolex in the wild.

Less than .000019% of the world population has a Submariner. That’s reality.

But if you believe what some people on TRF say, then every single solitary person in Hong Kong and New York wear a Submariner. This includes maids, children, bartenders, and trash collectors. “They are literally everywhere.”

The funny thing is not only do i not see them too often, but sometime people compliment me on my watch and say they have never actually seen one in person, but they still know what it is

This is what I get most often. There is something about the quality and execution of even a SS Rolex that stands out. When people finally figure out what it is they want to check it out. Most have never even held one.

Then I get out on a commercial boat of some kind (fishing/science/biz) and there are Rolexes everywhere.

The Sub is probably the world's most faked watch. Going around and looking at wrists is not going to tell you much about how many Subs there really are.

Some on this forum have reported travelling to Hong Kong and seeing everyone and their mother wearing Rolex watches. Perhaps they were somewhat deceived...

No, HK is really full of real Rolexes even on the wrists of those you're assuming can't afford them.

Most local working people in HK don't spend money on 1 car let alone 2 cars, car insurance, petrol, or going out to eat 5/6 nights a week, huge TVs, multiple large appliances in their tiny flats, boats, jet skis, motorcycles, truckloads of Xmas and B'day presents, hers/his wardrobes the size of bedrooms filled with clothes and shoes/boots, pets, pet food, vet bills, golf, sporting events, etc, etc, etc.

There's a million items the average HK working person does without and doesn't spend money on compared to an "average" American or Kiwi. Most locals I know in HK also know how to do something that's becoming more rare....save money. They view buying a Rolex as purchasing something they can recover the money from if needed.

Believe it or not, by working a normal job and saving one doesn't have to be wealthy to purchase a Rolex if one isn't constantly spending money on all sort of frivolous, unneeded shit we now think are the necessities of life.

Most locals are well-versed in Rolex watches and aren't the ones buying fakes. Those are mostly the tourists coming off the cruise ships and from the airport.

Yes, CRM makes some great points about savings and affordability. $7k or $8k seems like a lot in a single purchase, but how many of us really couldn't save $500 each month if we really wanted to? I imagine not many if we cut out a few things. That would easily purchase 1 Rolex a year and could do so making $60k a year if saving correctly. Though I do wonder if the purchasing habits in Hong Kong when compared to those other populations mentioned, have more to do with population density than any superior saving habits/methods.

I see more 16610's than 116610's, but definitely see them around. These days they are harder to get so I am seeing many more people sporting datejusts or swapping to AP/Patek.

Certain events are hotbeds for watch spotting. At the recent MotoGP in Austin I saw literally dozens of Subs amongst the spectators along with a couple of BLNR’s and GMT-LN’s. At a charity party thrown by former World Champion Kevin Schwantz I saw 3 Subs, 3 DayDates, and a black 116520 on the attendees. Kevin himself(who owns a bunch of watches including a couple of Daytonas he won at Daytona) was wearing an Explorer I.
Any car shows I’ve been too also feature lots of nice watches. I think gearheads in general dig mechanical watches.

In nyc i either see subs or older datejusts. Atleast 2 subs a month on average. Also see an occassional polar dial exp2.
