4000 posts celebrated with an SD 4000. LONG POST!

Guys, this Monday I finally FLIPPED MY SS SUB DATE!!

I thought I had had it for too long since I bought it on the 27th. of July this year!

Well, to be serious now:

I never really liked the cyclops. IMHO, it is "in the way" since you have to look DIRECTLY onto the cyclops to tell the date. And I don't like how the hands are blurred when passing underneath the cyclops.

I have worn my SS Sub Date, but since I am VERY cautious with my watches, it had NO scratches whatsoever.

So on an impulse, I phoned my AD Monday and simply told him that I was not really happy with the Sub Date and asked if I could have it swabbed for an SD instead. I simply just like the cleaner look of the dial and the thicker case that fits my wrist better.

My AD told me that he would be willing to do so if the watch was like new in box. He would have to inspect it and maybe have to detract a small amount since I had used it.

I asked whether I could STILL get 10 % discount on the SD, too, and he said "Of course you can", but he would STILL have to inspect the watch.

I immediately went to my AD with the Sub Date, he inspected it and told me that "all is what is should be".

An SD would arrive this week, he also told me.

I only had to pay the price difference between the SS Sub Date and the SD (minus 10 % discount on the SD)!

The watch I regretted the most flipping would be the Submariner Date 16610 that I swobbed for a 5513 at the Portobello Road market in London. The 16610 was nice since it still had the "Open 6 and 9" date type that I like very much.

And of course I also regret having flipped the SS "Zenith" Daytonas that I have had, but it was just TOO tempting to get a huge premium by selling them. Luckily, NONE of the SS Daytonas belonged to the "Rare to very rare" series or variations (for example "Inverted 6" or "Floating Cosmograhp") that are shown in this overview:

Congrats on getting the SD for your 4000th post, Bo! Awesome watch. I went through much the same reasoning process as you describe before getting my SD (as well as the seemingly obligatory surrogates beforehand).

There is really no difference between the two series. Just the letters. Thank God Rolex has changed nothing on the SD.......YET!

In fact, my AD received FOUR SD's in the shipment from Rolex:

3 "M" series and 1 "Z" series. I had a look at all four to find the nicest (although there SHOULD be no difference, sometimes there ARE tiny differences all the same). I chose the "M" with the easiest serial number and (being supersticious sometimes) avoided an "M" series with a lot of "4"'s in the serial number (the number 4 means "death" and is unlucky in China)

I have heard that the M movements are all made in China and they can be bought in Beijing for US$10 a dozen ....
